Myrtle: The Humble Giant
Myrtle is cultivated around the Mediterranean. Different origins produce markedly different oils. The provenance from Corsica is referred to as “Green Myrtle,” for the green hue of the oil. Myrtle oil from Morocco is referred to as “Red Myrtle” for its orange hue. With the expansion of aromatherapy the Corsican oil has become somewhat of a rarity. As is not unusual the Corsican oil outshines its sisters from different origins.

The Site: Corsica, Albania and Morocco
As the Corsican oil is so rare and admittedly somewhat pricey, Myrtle essential oil has also been produced in other areas. The counterpart to the Green Myrtle are the oils from Morocco and Tunisia which are light brown to reddish and just a tad more intense than the oil from Corsica.. The distillate from Albania, also called Green Myrtle is squarely in the middle offering a beautiful oil for every budget.

Therapeutic Properties
As elegantly restrained as the original Green Myrtle is as powerful are its therapeutic properties. Myrtle has an uncanny ability to loosen tensions in the heart area. It is also among the most effective expectorant agents for common cold symptoms. The oil has a powerful hypnotic effect, is a prostate decongestant and is considered a thyroid stimulant. According to French style aromatherapy its main uses are for the common cold, cystic fibrosis, sore throat, bronchiolitis, hyperthyroidism, wrinkles and fine lines and insomnia. A very specific quality of the Moroccan Myrtle is its ability to decongest veins. The Albanian Myrtle, by chemical composition and with respect to therapeutics can be perceived as being right in the middle between the two others.
