Dalmatian Sage: Strength from Antiquity

The Schola Medica Salernitana attributed fabulous powers to Sage one thousand years ago, stating: If there is Sage in your garden, there will be no need of a doctor. Saint Hildegard von Bingen recommended Sage to dry detrimental fluids in the body. Originating in Greece, Salvia officinalis is today cultivated all around the Mediterranean, from the Adriatic Balkans (historical Dalmatia) to Spain. Sage stands out as it manifests a diversity of properties, many likely based on its substantial content of thujone.

Sage

The Site: Hillsides of Bosnia

This Salvia officinalis comes to us from an area overlapping its ancient origin, proudly a bio-authentic wild Dalmatian Sage. It wields the strength of a very substantial therapeutic agent. Its fragrance is intense and fresh, opening the breathing faculties and clearing the head in an instant. Its character is defined by the powerful quality imparted by the stoney soil in which it grows, often alone, away from other vegetation too weak to thrive.

Therapeutic Properties

In French Style aromatherapy, Sage oil is used to dissolve fatty tissue and to soften keratin plugs in the skin. It is part of formulations to counteract cellulite, adiposity, aging of the skin, premenopausal symptoms, herpes simplex and excess perspiration.

The high content of thujone, a ketone requiring greater care, warrants a cautionary reminder that this oil should be used wisely in low concentrations so its strengthening qualities are not spoiled by adverse effects. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, individuals with neurological conditions or estrogen dependent cancers.
#37 Sage
Sage oil offers a particularly interesting study in the ways nature goes about its business. One might expect it to be toxic based on concerns around isolated thujone. However, the balance of compounds found in the essential oil does not present the same unpleasant effect. This reminds us how nature produces complexities only ruined by reductionism.

One of the best ways to make the oil work is to blend it with multiple other oils. A blend for premenopausal complaints would hence consist of Sage, Clary Sage, Roman Chamomile, Anise Seed, Peppermint and Rosemary. For flat lesions in gynecology one would blend Sage with Lemongrass, Niaouli and Tropical Basil.
