Distilled by a Friend: Lavender sauvage

If true elegance is achieved by resisting exaggeration then this Wild Lavandula angustifolia is the perfect example.  As it survives the rough winters in Provence, our Lavender sauvage braves adversity without compromising any complex subtlety. The essential oil mediates the virtues of the plant: Survive and maintain integrity with dignity, even in rough and challenging environments.

Consecutive harvests of our Lavender sauvage #175 have been coming from the same distiller friend for over 20 years. The harvest is done in the true SIMPLES fashion by sickle and cloth sack (Conforming with the SIMPLES prohibition of motorized harvesting devices). Despite or because of its reserved beauty this oil has over the years found a steady following among our customers, who tend to stock up on it when available.

The Site: Haute Provence

This Lavender sauvage is a classic harvested in the mountains of the Département des Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Notable populations of Wild Lavender have gradually receded to altitudes above 1200 m.

Many of the established growers know of well hidden plots of wild Lavender growing in remote locations of the high plains of Haute Provence. They resort to these plants for seedlings to cultivate Population Lavender. Some of these wild plants are almost 100 years old. They originated as volunteering plants arising next to the cultivations started early in the 20th century. Seeds from these plots are carried across the plateaux and give rise to new young plants that spring up every few years. See photo!

Harvesting Wild Lavender

Therapeutic Properties

True Wild Lavender consistently has a more complex composition than the Fine (population) Lavenders and clonal specimens. Known for its profound anti-inflammatory effects it is classically used in aromatherapy for all physical, emotional and mental issues that are best addressed by creating balance.

Our Wild Lavender is antispasmodic, sedative, and hypotensive. It eases emotional overload and helps to avoid nightmares. On the physical plane it is especially useful for bedsores and pain related to inflammation of the skin and the musculoskeletal system. The ability of this Wild Lavender to treat burns and mitigate burn-related infections is truly phenomenal.

#175 Lavender Wild ~ sauvage SIMPLES

This Lavender essential oil is much gentler than more outspoken Lavender varieties such as Lavender Maillette. It is almost surprising that in our time, where digital images are routinely oversaturated and perfumes are grossly amplified with piercing synthetics, a gentle oil like this is still cherished by a broad following of connoisseurs.

While not every year is prolific for Wild Lavender, we are currently able to offer the softest, most precious and elegant oil from our trusted supplier for over 20 years.

Certified organic by Ecocert and SIMPLES. A Bio Authentic Original – France.
