Hello,

July Gardening Tips

Find a place in the shade, pour yourself a tall iced tea and take your time to enjoy your garden...Plants play a very important role in a healthy ecosystem. They reduce  pollutants,  oxygenate the atmosphere,  and are important to overall human health.

July Gardening Tips for Deep Roots
According to the calendar (if not the forecast), July is the time of year when your vegetable and herb gardens should be in full bloom, and your flowers couldn’t be brighter. It’s also a critical time for smart watering habits.

Know When to Water: Watering while the sun is up means some water will be lost to evaporation. When using automatic watering programs, set watering for morning--ideally between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Tricks to Conserve Water: Ideally, use drip irrigation, soaker hoses or other water-conserving methods in vegetable and flower gardens. Besides heat levels, low humidity, extra sunny days and wind can cause plants to need extra water.

Deep Water Your Lawn: A lawn doesn’t need to be watered every day. Instead, deep water your lawn every three.

Increase Crop Production: To keep vegetable plants producing for the next month or more, don't let vegetables remain on the plant past picking time.

Keep Herbs From Going to Seed: Just like any plant, herbs want to seed in summer. Pinch any sign of flowers immediately from herbs such as basil and cilantro. This will keep leaves soft and prevent a strong or bitter taste.

Edible Plants

Depending on the heat in your area, you can now plant lettuce, radish, carrots, beets, spinach and kale for a fall harvest.
You can continue to plant beans, squash, melons and sweet corn throughout the summer.
Stake your tomatoes.

Look for tomato hornworms, which can quickly defoliate stems. Because they're green, they're hard to see even though they may be several inches long, so watch for the black droppings. The bugs must be handpicked. Don't over water tomatoes, water deeply when you do, so it soaks a foot or more into the ground.

Our Tips: For July Gardening.

Tips for July

Keep an eye on your garden.

There's not much for gardeners to do this month other than to water, and watering the right way is critical. Usually a garden needs one inch of water per week to stay healthy. Don't water once the sun is high and really hot--you could burn the leaves of delicate plants. Watering in the early morning is best; watering in the evening can leave too much moisture, and can attract disease.

Patio Plants

Container plants really have to be watched in summer. Some will need watering every day, others might require twice a day. Don't forget to pinch back for longer blooming and feed. Add mulch to your garden now and save time later. Mulching will help to keep out weeds and pests, mulch will also preserve moisture so that you don't have to water as often, will improve your soil and your garden's overall appearance.

Remember to turn off your mower and let it cool down, before adding gasoline into the fuel tank. Feed your lawn, as the more you water the more you leach the soil.

Keep Herbs From Going to Seed:

Just like any plant, herbs want to seed in summer. Pinch any sign of flowers immediately from herbs such as basil and cilantro. This will keep leaves soft and prevent a strong or bitter taste.

Increase Crop Production: To keep vegetable plants producing for the next month or more, don't let vegetables remain on the plant past picking time. Pick them even if you don't plan to use them immediately. Vegetables that remain unpicked past their prime, sends a signal to the plant that inhibits further blossoming. July is when plants are heavily producing vegetables. You may want to check plants every day for ripened vegetables, especially fast-growing beans, cucumbers, eggplants, squashes and tomatoes.

Fertilizing Plants: Fertilize containers. Constant watering flushes out nutrients.
