Pelaqita Persian Cats and Persian Kittens
April 1, 2017
Changes
As you can see, this month's Newsletter has a new look and design. The changes to the Newsletter is not the only change or news that has happened in our household in the past six weeks.

Our Rosie ("Pelaqita She's No Second-Hand Rose") attained her CFA Grand Champion title and is also now a Champion in TICA. Rosie is our second cat from our cattery's breeding to be Grand Championed. Eden (owned by Jackie Bates of Purrfekt-Paws Persians) was our first Grand Champion of our breeding. To say that we are not pleased is an understatement - we are over-the-moon with excitement!
We also have some terrible news to share - but it had a great outcome! On February 26th, I noticed Millie was non-weight bearing on her left, front leg. I took her to the vet, and an X-ray was done which showed a break above her elbow. We had to take Mills to MedVet to an orthopedic specialist. Millie is four years old. As it was explained to me, a young cat's does "not spontaneously break bones" and that the cause is usually due to bone cancer. Tests and a needle biopsy were performed, and while there was no evidence that there was cancer anywhere else in Millie's body, the needle biopsy came back "highly suspicious."
After consulting with the orthopedic specialist, the oncologist, and my own veterinarian, it was decided that removal of Millie's leg was the best option for her.

Millie was dropped off at my regular vet's office on March 1, 2017, and they amputated her leg including scapula on March 2, 2017. The prognosis for Millie living a long life is very good by the removal of her leg and chances of reoccurrence of cancer elsewhere is less than 10%. Overall, a great prognosis!!!!

Millie - Black & White Persian cat
Millie came home on March 3, 2017. This is a picture of her incision. She is getting around really well and seems to be healing well.

Millie had her suture removal and wound check on March 15, 2017! She is healing so well and gets around like she has always had three legs. I am so relieved about Millie and her future.
Only time will tell if Millie can still be a breeding queen. I asked the specialist about this, and his advice was that Millie would let me know if she were up to breeding and motherhood duties. For now, I want her to fully recover before trying to breed her again. She has already had one heat cycle, so perhaps in another two months, she will be okay to breed.
I specifically asked the specialist if this cancer is genetic and thus, making Millie's kittens more likely to get bone cancer. The short answer --- NO. So everyone with a Millie kitten, please do not freak out.
Banfield & VCA Animal Hospitals Under Same Corporate Umbrella
A few months ago, I came across an article on Facebook about Banfield and VCA Animal Hospitals being bought out by Mars Inc. In my opinion, this is NOT a good thing for us pet owners.
One of the several reasons I do not think this is a good thing for pet owners is:
1. Corporations by their very existence have very high-profit margins and low customer service. In other words, they are only interested in profit and really have no vested interest in their clients and/or our pets best interests. It is solely profit motivated.

2. My own bad experience with VCA as related in an article I wrote for this Newsletter.
Did You Know?
Almost 50% of pure white cats with blue eyes are deaf. The problems lies with a defective dominant white gene. In some cases where a white cat has only one blue eye, the ear on the same side is hearing impaired.

Cats were working for the British mail service as early as 1868. In their official status, they protected packages, which often contained perishable food, from certain destruction by free-roaming rodents. The Controller of London's Money Order Office allotted a weekly stipend for each efficient mouser employed at museums and similar establishments. Over one century's worth of correspondence between the post office and the Controller, about regular cat care cost increases, was preserved and published in a book.

Thou art the Great Cat, the avenger of the Gods, and the judge of words, and the president of the sovereign chiefs and the governor of the holy Circle; thou art indeed…the Great Cat. ~ Inscription on the Royal Tombs at Thebes

One reason we admire cats is for their proficiency in one-upmanship. They always seem to come out on top, no matter what they are doing, or pretend they do. ~ Barbara Webster
