chickens and peacock
I do not think that Mother Nature knows whether or not she is ready for Spring. The weather around here can be cold and even snow one day and then the next day it is in the high 60's and sunny out.

On one such sunny day, I let our chickens and our male peacock (Henry) out for a few hours to enjoy scratching in the ground and just generally enjoying their freedom and not being "cooped" up all day. They sure did enjoy being out of their pen for the day, and when it was time for them to go back in their pen, I just called out to them and gave a little whistle and in their pen they went. So very cute!

Speaking of a "whistle," did you know that the American Whistle Corporation of Columbus (Ohio) has been manufacturing whistles since 1956. It is the only plant of its kind in the United States. The American Whistle Company has tours for the public.
Ear Cleaning
Just like trimming your cat's nails/claws on a weekly basis, you should also inspect, and if needed, clean your cat's ears at the same time. If you do this on a routine basis, you will ensure that your cat is not developing any ear problem (discharge, ear mites, etc.).

Supplies You Will Need:

1. Cotton balls or cotton make-up pads;
2. Ear cleansing solution (we use LA Ear Care Formula, a holistic product) which cleans ears and eliminates odor, dissolves ear wax and removes dirt and debris by bringing it to the surface. Ear Care Formula dries the ear (does not contain any alcohol which many other products have). ;
3. A second person (optional); and
4. Your cat's favorite treats

Heatworm and Cats
Did you know that cats can get heartworm disease just like dogs? In an extensive study in Texas, 26% of cats had positive heartworm tests and adult worms were present in 10% of these cats. The parasite that causes heartworm disease in both dog and cats is called Dirofilaria immitis. Cats, like dogs, can become infected with microscopic heartworm larvae when a mosquito carrying the larvae bites your cat. Mosquitoes become infected from unprotected dogs, foxes, coyotes and wolves (abundant in central Ohio); these canines are a source of the heartworm disease-causing parasite that is transmitted to pets. The heartworm larvae enter the cat's bloodstream and migrate to the heart and lungs where it causes inflammation leading to the common clinical signs associated with heartworm disease in cats, called Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease (HARD). The most common symptoms are coughing, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, fainting, wheezing and sudden death. These signs are often mistaken for feline asthma, allergic bronchitis or other respiratory diseases. We currently use a blood test to help diagnosis heartworm in cats, but they do not always produce clear answers and are not always accurate. A positive test is always positive, but a negative test does not mean that cat does not have heartworm disease. So, ultrasounds and x-rays are used to help with diagnosis.

There is no available FDA-approved treatment for HARD in cats even though there is for dogs. The biggest myth is that your indoor cat is safe because it does not go outside. In a recent study in North Carolina, 28% of the cats diagnosed with heartworm disease were inside-only cats. It only takes one mosquito to bite and infect your cat.

Luckily, with regular preventive medication like Revolution, heartworm disease is easily prevented. With a monthly application of Revolution, you can control fleas, heartworm, intestinal parasites such as Hookworms and Roundworms, and ear mites. So why not prevent your healthy cat from becoming infected with heartworms and apply year round Revolution to your cat today?
Did You Know?
Female cats are "polyestrous" which means they have many heat cycles over the course of the year. A cat will usually not cycle when the days become shorter (lack of day light) - November, December. Although, some breeders will "force" their female cats to come into heat by the use of a sun lamp in order to breed their cats year round.

When kittens get their teeth, they get 26 needle sharp milk teeth. At about 6 months old they get their adult teeth.

Your cat is either a "righty" or a "lefty". Only 40 percent of cats are ambidextrous, while another 40 percent are either right-pawed or left-pawed.

Tylenol is toxic to a cat.

If a cat pushes its face against your head, it is a sign of acceptance and affection.

The first breeding pair of Siamese cats arrived in England in 1884.

"The real measure of a day's heat is the length of a sleeping cat." ~ Charles J. Brady

Hey Susan,

Took this picture of Rusty just today (January 2011). Lounging after a big lunch :) Rusty is 5 and a half years old now.
Next time, I'll take a pic of Chester. He was napping in his cat tent so couldn't get a good one of him this time. Y'all take care!
