Wow

On Friday, June 29th, a dreadful storm whipped through Ohio. According to the weather service, the type of storm was called a "straight-line storm" which means tornado force winds without the rotation. We lost approximately 15 trees on our property. The picture above is taken to the right of our driveway in a grove of ancient, tall, hardwood trees where most of the damage was done.

blocked driveway by tree
This picture is of our driveway reflecting more damage to our poor trees. We were without phone, electricity and water for almost three days. We ran a small generator to power the refrigerator, so we didn't lose all our food. However, since we are on well water, without electricity, we had no water. Ugh! I have never felt so dirty and grimy in my life. I do not envy the people that did not have power or running water way back when.

We had to haul water from a neighbor's farm so that we could water our pasture animals. Due to the sweltering days that we had during this time, we hauled a lot of water so the horses, goats, miniature donkey, and all the chickens, peacocks, etc. had enough to drink.

Unfortunately, this was also the night Gracie decided to have her kittens which did not make it. It was a bad night all around.

Announcement

Since we moved to Ohio in December 2007, we had established a relationship with a local veterinarian practice, and one of the veterinarians contributed articles for our Newsletter. Due to unforeseen circumstances we have severed our relationship with this practice and have found a new veterinarian that is one that is more breeder and critter friendly.
Keeping Cats Cool During Summer
During the summer, cats can be susceptible to heat exhaustion and dehydration. Overweight and senior cats are at a higher risk, especially if they are let outside. Leave your cat indoors during the hot summer days and make sure she/he has a cool place to rest in and ALWAYS has fresh, clean water available.

Cats and Toxoplasmosis
Recently, there was a report published in Arch Gen Psychiatry, "Toxoplasma gondii Infection and Self-Directed Violence in Mothers" which is an excellent example of the dangerous and misleading journalism that is rampant on the internet and as seen on CNN Health, NPR.org, and TIME.

Did You Know?
Don't be alarmed when your cat brings you gifts of bids, mice or other wild critters. This is a natural part of their gift ritual, and they do it to please you.

Andy is the free-fall champion of Florida, pre-1981. The pet of former state Senator Ken Myer fell 16 stories from a Miami high-rise.

Cream Puff lived 38 years and 3 days. The Austin, Texas owner also owned the previous old-timer record holder - Granpa Rexs Allen, a Sphynx, who lived to the age of 34 years, 2 months.

Humphrey received notoriety as the most traveled feline. He flew more than 600,000 miles after escaping from his carrier inside a Canadian commercial aircraft.

"My cat has got no name We simply call him Cat; He doesn't seem to blame Anyone for that. For he is not like us Who often, I'm afraid, Kick up quite a fuss If our names are mislaid." ~ Vernon Scannell

Seal Point Himalayan cat
Hi there!

Love your site! Attached is a picture of my Seal Point Himmie. His name is Bisou (French for "kiss" because that's all he does!) He will be three years old in October 2012, and this is his second lion cut. He loves it!

Bisou is actually 1/2 dog - he LOVES to play fetch - we play at least 30 minutes a day. It's crazy.

I actually got him because I had a blue point Himmie, Sir Lancelot, who was 15 years old and I had to let go due to a brain tumor. I met with a local breeder, and she only had four left in the litter. I picked Bisou because he was just the little instigator with his siblings and full of energy. He was only 4 ounces when I got him and could fit in the palm of my hand. He has quickly grown into a very handsome boy!

His favorite toy is a little foam soccer ball that we play fetch with every day. Even when I can't find the ball to play, he brings it to me... I think he hides them. He is 100% addicted to cat treats! Every day before I leave, he goes to his dish and just meows at the top of his lungs until I give him a few treats. He has trained me well! One time, I had just filled the treat container... I left for work and came home to the open, EMPTY, container lying on the floor... and Bisou just looked at me with those big, blue eyes.

He also makes a great alarm clock... if I hit the snooze button too many times, he's in my face meowing and licking my eyes to wake up! He's very curious and friendly... and can be very temperamental! He definitely has a great personality which is something I have noticed about the Himmies. He knows when you're happy and want to play, as well as, when you're sad and just need him to cuddle.
