Happy Holidays

kitten among Christmas presents
We hope that you all had a great Thanksgiving and had a safe Holiday season. Thank you to everyone that participated in our Survey to help make our Newsletter better. We appreciate that you took the time to do this.

One of the requests that we received in the Survey asked for more information about bathing, grooming, tools for grooming and general cat care. We will be putting more of this type of information in the upcoming Newsletters. However, a couple of the articles will be repeats from late last year to cover some basic cat care/grooming tips.
Persian Cat Care
Caring for a Persian takes a little more effort than that which another breed of cat requires. Due to the long, double coat of the Persian and the fact that many Persians have eyes that become "weepy"; caring for your Persian requires daily maintenance. There are a few main categories of Persian cat care:

  • Coat Maintenance;
  • Eye Cleaning;
  • Nails; • Teeth;
  • Ear Cleaning;
  • Bathing; and
  • Proper Nutrition

In this article, we will be addressing coat maintenance, and there are other articles on eye cleaning, nails, teeth care, ear cleaning, bathing, and proper nutrition.

When Is It An Emergency?
As we all know, humans as well as animals can survive quite a while without food, but they always need water. When a cat gets sick because they are such secretive animals, the cat does not often times show just how ill it is until much too late and many of us are unaware that there is something amiss with our pet. Hence, when we discover how sick our pet is, we all struggle with "do we need to take the cat to the emergency veterinarian or not"? One way to answer that question is to check for dehydration. Dehydration in cats is a serious and potentially life threatening condition as there is an excessive loss of water and electrolytes (minerals such as sodium, chloride and potassium). Dehydration can cause physiological things to happen (i.e., major organs begin to fail, body temperature drops, shock, etc.) and the cat could die.

Did You Know?
The fumes from moth balls destroy a cat's liver cells -- Use cedar in your closet instead!.

Cats born without tails (like Manx) genetically, have a shorter spine and longer rear legs than other breeds of cats.

A cat's heart beats twice as fast as a human heart. At 140-240 beats per minute depending on resting heart rate or if stressed.

"One reason we admire cats is for their proficiency in one-upmanship. They always seem to come out on top, no matter what they are doing, or pretend they do." ~ Barbara Webster

We are planning a breeding - just waiting for the girls to come into season (the short daylight hours affect cats and they usually do not cycle during the winter months) AND for Diggie to know what his job is.
