    Dear

'Tis The Season

Wow!  It seems that one day I was trying to get organized and cook our Thanksgiving dinner and then the next day right into Christmas.  For some reason, this year, seems to have gone by really fast and I am left with the feeling of playing catch-up all the time.

This picture is of a kitten we had a few years ago.  She was exploring under our Christmas tree and I remember thinking what a sweet creature she was.   Remember, to keep your cats/kittens safe during the Holiday season and to help you to know what to look for, once again, we have repeated our Holiday Dangers article and what to look out for to keep our best friends safe and healthy during this time.

The last kitten from our May litters, Julia, will be leaving this coming weekend for her new home in Chicago.  They have decided to rename her "Cinnabun" as they think that is what her face looks like.  Happy travels Cinnabun, we have enjoyed having you in our lives these extra weeks.

Understanding that there is a difference in veterinary medicine between a veterinarian (who completes an accredited veterinary program) and a veterinary specialist (who completes additional schooling beyond the DVM program) can be key to your pet's health.

To help keep our pets safe and healthy this holiday season, we suggest that you keep the following seasonal dangers for your cat (and dog) in mind:

Successful Aging - Mobility Wellness

Please note, this is an article that we ran in June and repeated due to reader(s) request.

In our Successful Aging Series, we're tackling issues of mobility in senior companion animals. Immobility and pain, oftenn due to arthritis, are all too commonplace in dogs and cats reaching their "Golden Years". In this post, Dr. Jane shares exactly how these problems develop and how they go from acture episodes to chronic disease. Fortunately, there are proactive measures pet parents can take to help diminish the likelihood of these problems becoming big-time concerns for their pet kids later in life.

Cat O'Month

Moochi on his flower bed
Email received November 2012

Hi Susan:

Just wanted to send you a picture of Moochi's new "Spider flower  carpeted bed".   I saw it online in a YouTube video and thought it was  adorable.  I  searched and searched the web and finally found out where I could get one.  At first he was actually "afraid" of  it, but has come to like it now.   The picture should have a title "I'M SO SPOILED!"

Send Us Those Cat Pictures

Does your cat do something that you think nobody would believe unless they saw a picture of it? Send us that picture. Is your cat having a love affair with another species? Send us the picture. Is your cat the life of any gathering? Send us the picture. You get the idea. We thought it would be fun to show a Cat of the Month photo every month which will be posted in our newsletter. If you submit a picture, please include your full name (this information is just for us and will not be shared), the name, age or date of birth, color, and breed of your cat. If there are other animals in the picture, please let us know who or what is appearing with your cat. You MUST be the owner of the picture in order to submit the picture to us. The cat does NOT need to be a Persian cat, nor does it have to be a purebred. We just want to make this fun.

Did You Know?
There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with 33 different breeds.

Adult cats have 30 teeth (2 upper canines, 6 upper incisors, 6 upper premolars, and 2 upper molars and on the lower jaw: 2 lower canines, 6 lower incisors, 4 lower premolars, and 2 lower molars).  dogs have 42.

"PSI trailings" attempt to explain a cat's ability to travel a long distance to return to their home.  It is said they use the earth's gravity to determine "their place" in the world and to develop the ability to return there when necessary.

Besides smelling with their nose, cats can smell with an additional organ called the Jacobson's organ, located in the upper surface of the mouth.  Cats have a vomeronasal organ behind their front teeth that heightens their sense of smell.

"The playful kitten with its pretty little tigerish gambole is infinitely more amusing than half the people one is obliged to live with in the world." ~ Lady Sydney Morgan
