cats in front of wood stove
It is freezing here today (Tuesday, February 1st)! It has been raining most of the night and now it has made all this very nice (ha!!!) ice on the roadways. Tonight we will get the snow. The temperature (with wind chill) is about 32 this morning with freezing rain expected all day. I think I am ready for Spring!

We thought you all might get a kick out of seeing how the cats gather around our Buck Stove. It isn't so much for the heat that they do this (although one of our cats, Lucy, loves it for the heat), but they like to watch the flames. Lucy (not shown) is usually the one that will sit on the brick hearth and watch the flames in the stove for hours on end. Isn't it amazing what cats will find that amuses them?
Urine Marking and Spraying Behavior in Cats
What is Spraying?

In general, the term urine spraying means when a cat "marks" his environment. When a cat sprays he will back up to a vertical surface (such as a wall) hold his tail high while rapidly twitching it and emits a forcible spray of urine on the surface. Oftentimes the cat's back feet will be treading during the spraying.

What is Marking?

Marking is the term generally used to denote both the standard urine spraying while standing and urine marking while in the squat position.

Before Getting a Kitten
Your Persian cat will depend on you throughout its life which is typically about 15 - 20 years. Can you properly care for a Persian cat and provide a stable home for its lifetime? Statistics show that over 50 percent of all cats change owners at least once in their lifetime. Do you find that statistic as appalling and alarming as I do?

Did You Know?
It is believed that a white cat sitting on your doorstep just before your wedding is a sign of lasting happiness. White cats are a symbol of good luck in America, while black cats are a sign of bad luck.

A cat can pivot their ears independently 180 degrees. They have 32 muscles in each ear and use twelve or more muscles to control their ear movement. Humans have 6 muscles in each ear).

Cats have three distinct eye shapes: round, slanted, and almond.

Cats can see in color! They can distinguish red and blue colors but often confuse green and red according to veterinary ophthalmologists.

Litter Box

Well, despite (or maybe in spite of) my best intentions and plans, we will be having a litter which is due in February. The expected litter is from Cary Grant and Tempest - which is a breeding that I have wanted for quite a while. I expect some beautiful kittens from this mating with some great colors expected.

We have two kittens left to place in a forever home.

Cat O'Month
Hey Susan,

Just wanted to say hello and tell you that the new baby Finnegan (Fin) FKA Chester, which I changed because it didn't suit him, is doing great and Cheeto loves him. They were a little rocky at first but now they are best friends.

Here are a few pics I thought you might enjoy. By the way he has the BEST personality ever. He is extremely affectionate and sweet as ever. I couldn't have picked a better kitten.
