Jason is the hit of the party!

On June 17th, we had ten developmentally disabled individuals (including my brother, Matthew) out to our home for a morning of horse-back riding, playing with the goats, miniature donkey, and chickens.

This picture is of several of the young people with our miniature donkey, Jason. They all fell in love with Jason as he is the friendliest little guy and loves all the attention. Jason was the hit of the party!!

In this picture, I was leading my Arabian horse, Monte, and one of the young people was riding for the first time in her life. She was so excited and talked very enthusiastically while being led around our pasture. She really enjoyed going "fast"! Monte was a gem and was very kind and gentle to the young strangers in "his" pasture - I think he knew that he was very much admired, and he behaved like a perfect gentleman. This was the first time that Monte had someone ride him other than Susan or his trainer (he had a trainer about 7-8 years ago).

This is a picture of my developmentally disabled brother, Matthew, who is 46 years old riding Monte. Matthew's balance is not good, so we had to be very careful that he did not fall off. After riding and playing with all our critters, we all had a picnic on the grass in our front yard under the shade of the black walnut trees.

We hope to have Matthew and a few of his friends out to our place again sometime this summer. We had a blast with them, and they got so much enjoyment out of visiting with our animals that it made all the precautions that we took to make sure their visit was a safe one worth it.

Newcomers

A new horse is coming to our home this coming weekend. His name is Mac, and he is a six-year-old Appaloosa gelding. He will be John's horse as Rocket is quite elderly and has not been doing well this year. Look for Mac's picture next month. The other additions to our menagerie are two female German Shepherd Dogs. We will be driving down to their breeders, in Florida, in the middle of July to pick up our girls. We are very excited to get them. At this time, we "think" their names are going to be Sasha and Tanya. Look for their pictures in the September newsletter.

Have a great Fourth of July and stay safe!
Animal Welfare vs. Rights
There is a difference between Animal Welfare and Animal Rights. Many people think these are the same thing, but they aren't. Please take a moment to read this article.

Animal Welfare means animals are to be treated humanely, have a quality life, and (when needed) a humane death. Animal Welfare supports responsible ownership, breeding, and use of animals in agriculture and research.

Did You Know?
Your cat loves you and can "read" your mood. We all know that if you are sad or under stress, you will notice a difference in your cat's behavior.

The first cat show was held in 1895 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York and in England in 1871.

"Sociable" cats will follow you from room to room to monitor your activities throughout the day.

The more cats are spoken to, the more they will speak to you.

Have you ever tried to feed your cat food taken right out of the refrigerator? Did they like it or leave it? Most cats prefer their food at or near room temperature.
