Happy 4th of July!

Guinea Hen - Keets

On June 22nd, we received 15 newborn Guinea Fowl Keets. We got two different colors: 5 lavender and ten purple. When they are older, they will attain their full color. Aren't they cute? Guineas are the "natural way to garden", they do not destroy your garden and/or plants, but eat all sorts of insects in your yard and around your property, including ticks, beetles, and snakes. Once they are acclimated to their coop and know that is where they live, you can let them out during the day to wander around your property eating all the insects and pests. Guineas' home range is about 1/4 mile. We can't wait until they are grown up enough to go up to the chicken coop with the chickens and then start doing their job around our home. I am so sick of ticks, spiders and the Asian beetles that are around right now. We cannot spray our pastures for ticks as our horses graze, so getting the Guineas was the perfect solution.
Annual Vet Appointment
When was the last time your cat was at your veterinarian's office? In a recent study, 25% of Americans believed that they did not need to bring their cat to the vet because the cat lives inside the house. This belief jeopardizes the health of millions of cats. It is true that indoor cats are less likely to be hit by a car or involved in a fight, but they are just as likely to develop cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease or another serious ailment. This is why routine yearly checkups are important. Another surprising finding was that pet owners with older cats were less likely to bring their cats to the vet. It is much easier to treat illnesses in the early stages before the cat has had time to develop secondary conditions.

It is very common for pet owners to consult the internet to find out what is wrong with their pet before seeing the veterinarian. However, much of the information on the web is inaccurate and is a poor substitute for a physical exam from a veterinarian. During wellness visits your veterinarian can talk about important nutritional information, healthy weight, flea and tick control, heartworm prevention and preventive health care screenings. Even though there is no substitute for going to the vet, you may be starting to sweat thinking about getting your cat into the car and to the vet office. To help ease the trauma of a vet visit (for you AND your cat), I have included four very useful tips that will make trips easier for you cat. Don't be scared or embarrassed about your cat's behavior. Trust me; veterinarians have seen it all - vomiting, soiling their carrier, becoming a lion, or urinating in fear! And none of it bothers us! We are prepared to help you and make the experience as pleasant as possible.

(1) Make the carrier your cat's second home. Dust off the cat carrier and place it in your family room, make it part of the furniture. Place a soft towel inside to make it cozier for your kitty. Your cat will be able to transfer their scent to the carrier and no longer see the carrier as a scary foreign object.

(2) Turn the carrier into a meal center. Place a yummy meal or two into the carrier so your cat associates the carrier with good feelings. Also, toss one of your cat's favorite treats into the carrier every time reward your cat for looking cute.

(3) Use a synthetic pheromone product. These products help calm cats during stress. These products can be sprayed on a blanket that you place into the carrier. Most veterinarians carry pheromone sprays and have found them to be very useful in relaxing a stressed cat.

(4) You could also take two laundry baskets tape them together and stow your cat.

Try these tips on your next visit to your veterinarian to make it much easier on both you and your cat. Regular visits to the vet office can prevent problems and help your cat live a longer, happier, healthier life!
White Vinegar
There are many uses for white vinegar that we are unaware of and knowing these tips could make the difference between keeping a cat or rehoming it.

White vinegar is a natural, inexpensive cleaning solution. Below are just a few of the uses for distilled white vinegar:

Did You Know?
Bob Walker and Frances Mooney have continually spent time and money renovating their Southern California house to suit the needs of their cats with 140 feet of elevated walkways which allow the cats to pass through walls and play overhead. View their home.

The world's largest cat measures more than 4 feet, stealing the record from another Maine Coon. The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that 5 year-old Stewie was certified as the new Guinness World Record holder after measuring 48 1/2 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail bone. That's a little more than 4 feet long. The record was previously held by another Maine Coon that measured 48 inches.

The skin cover on a cat's nose is referred to as "leather".

Cream Pull lived for 38 years and 3 days. The Austin, Texas owner also owned the previous old-timer record holder, Granpa Rexs Allen, a Sphynx, who lived to the age of 34 years and 2 months.

"There is nothing in the animal world, to my mind, more delightful than grown cats at play. They are so swift and light and graceful, so subtle and designing, and yet so richly comical" ~ Monica Edwards

Cat O'Month
Hi Susan:

Just thought I'd send you this pic of Calvin chillin' in the carrier. :)

Hobbs is hanging in there. His mouth flares up every 5 or 6 weeks, and I have to take him to the vet to get some depo shots, but his kidneys don't seem to be giving him much problem at this point. Keeping my fingers crossed. Both of these guys are treasures, and I LOVE having them in my life.

Hope things are going okay with you and the family. The new boy you have coming in is nice. Looking forward to seeing some kittens by him. I always enjoy stopping by the site to take a peek at the new babies. So cute. :)

Success with your upcoming litters!
