    Dear

It is that time of year again, and the pasture grass was high enough to cut, dry, rake and then bale.

raking dried grass into rows for baling
First, they cut the pasture grass and allow it to dry for two days or so. If it happens to rain while the cut pasture grass is drying, they wait an additional day or so to let the grass completely dry.  Otherwise, if they were to bale damp grass, it would mold which is toxic to horses.  Cows and some other hay consuming critters are not so particular as horses, and they can eat moldy hay.  Yuck!

Once the grass is dry,  they come back and rake the grass into rows for the baling machine.

After raking the grass into rows, the baling machine comes through and gathers up the grass in each row and then rolls the hay into a bale.  For ease of use around our property, we have them bale our bales at 40-inch diameter which weigh about 400-500 pounds each as that is what our little tractor can safely move.  The highest setting is a 60-inch diameter bale which weighs about 1100-1200 pounds.

What we get out of our two pastures is "usually" enough to feed our livestock throughout the winter until spring comes and the critters go back on pasture grass.  We are fortunate that we have the extra land/pasture so that we do not have to buy hay to feed our animals during the winter months.

Everyone have a fun and safe 4th of July!

Preparing Your Persian for Travel
by:   Annie Malcolm

While Persian cats may typically be placid in nature, traveling can still prove to be a challenge.  In general, cats do not enjoy traveling.  As creatures of habit, they prefer the safety and familiarity of their home.  But with adequate preparation, it is possible that you can learn how to travel effectively with your cat in spite of its behaviors and tendencies.  The laid back personality, quiet, and friendly demeanor of Persian cats make them far more predisposed to travel than other types of cats.  A Persian cat from Egypt recently survived a 3,400-mile ordeal traveling to London trapped inside her owner's suitcase.  The ASPCA recommends maintaining your cat's routine as much as possible while traveling from feeding schedules to playtime.  While cats are difficult to travel with, they also like to prove humans wrong and taking adequate preparation might just give them the opportunity to do so.

Cat Summertime Health Issues

By:  Susan MacArthur

Most cats seem to take care of themselves, and we are rarely aware of when they are not feeling well.  There are several preventable problems that cats run into, and they seem to increase with the summer season.  Your cat relies on you to be safe and well-cared for.

Cat O' the Month

No one submitted any pictures or bios for their cats this past month.  Sorry.

Send Us Those Cat Pictures

Does your cat do something that you think nobody would believe unless they saw a picture of it? Send us that picture. Is your cat having a love affair with another species? Send us the picture. Is your cat the life of any gathering? Send us the picture. You get the idea. We thought it would be fun to show a Cat of the Month photo every month which will be posted in our newsletter. If you submit a picture, please include your full name (this information is just for us and will not be shared), the name, age or date of birth, color, and breed of your cat. If there are other animals in the picture, please let us know who or what is appearing with your cat. You MUST be the owner of the picture in order to submit the picture to us. The cat does NOT need to be a Persian cat, nor does it have to be a purebred. We just want to make this fun.

Did You Know?
Cats are the sleepiest of all mammals.  They spend 16 hours each day sleeping.  With that in mind, a seven year old cat has only been awake for two years of its life!

The largest cat, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, was Himmy, who weighed 46 pounds, 15.25 ounces in 1986.  Guinness no longer records cats, so this is the last "documented" cat.

The easiest way to pick up cat hair?  Spray an anti-static spray on the area you want to clean.  Wait one minute, then wipe up the hair with a six-inch brush.

The world record according to Guinness Book of World Records of the cat with the most toes belongs to Jake who has 28 toes with 7 on each paw.  Cats with more than 5 toes are called "Polydactyl" cats.  This is a genetic (inherited) trait - Hemmingway's cats are said to be polydactyl.

Litter Box
Well, it looks like Gracie is pregnant, still crossing my fingers that this is true though.  She would be due on July 15th.  I also think Sophia is pregnant and she would be due a week later than Gracie.

We also believe that Diggie bred Sugar, but it is still too early to know if she is pregnant.

These three litters (if all these girls are pregnant) will be the last for 2013.  We want to give our girls a rest and a few consequtive months off from motherhood.
