'Tis The Season

As we wrote in last month's Newsletter, we decided that our male Pea Fowl (commonly called "Peacock"), Henry, was species confused because he was raised him with our chickens, we decided to get him a girlfriend. Henry now has a sweetheart and her name is Harriet (named by my husband). As you can see by the picture above, Henry has the gorgeous colors that you commonly see in peacocks and Harriet is mostly brown with some blue coloring on her neck. Henry will be three years old next year, and Harriet will then be two years old - at that time they are considered "mature birds" and there is a possibility that we may get babies!

chicks
We also got some new chicks as our other hens are getting a little older now and do not lay as many eggs. So, we ordered 20 chicks, and four different breeds made up this order. We got all hens except for one breed (Black Cochin) which we have a mixture of male and female. When they arrived they were less than 72 hours old and no bigger than the "mouse" you use with your computer. They have grown so much I just can't believe it - a few more weeks and they will be ready to go out to the barn and the chicken coop (right now, they are in our garage).

We have also ordered 15 Guinea Hens, and they will be shipped to us July 9th. We can't wait for these new babies as they eat ticks, fleas, beetles, snakes and more! They are the "natural" way to garden.
Pet Food Recall
Unfortunately, there has been another pet food recall. At this time, it is a voluntary recall including 14 different pet food brands sold in more than 40 states due to possible salmonella contamination. The pet food brands involved in this recall are listed below:

4Health
Apex
Canidae
Chicken Soup For The Pet Lover's Soul
Country Value Diamond
Diamond Naturals
Kaytee Fort-Diets
Kirkland
Natural Balance
Premium Edge
Professional
Taste of The Wild
Wellness

Also, according to The Center for Disease Control, 14 people in nine states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis. The CDC reported that multiple brands of dry pet food produced by Diamond Pet Foods at a single manufacturing facility had been linked to some of these infections.

MSN article regarding the expanded recall.

Please note: Life's Abundance pet food is NOT on the recall list and has NEVER been on any recall list. We are so pleased to have found food for our cats and dogs that are both healthy for them and SAFE!!

Dry or Canned Food?
The issue of whether to feed canned cat food or dry cat food is one that is very controversial. However, here are a few things to consider when deciding which is best for your cat. Remember, that the quality of the cat food whether canned or dry is a factor as well.

Successful Aging - Mobility Wellness
Did You Know?
There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with 33 different breeds.

The behaviors shown by most house cats have a parallel to what wild cats act like.

Cats have sharp, pointed teeth that are built for killing prey by suffocation/severing the spine. A cat's teeth are its greatest asset in the wild. In proportion to body size, the elusive Clouded Leopard has the longest canines in the family felidae, whereas the Jaguar has the strongest jaws.

The primitive ancestor of cats, Miacis, was a small, tree-living creature of the late Eocene period, some 45-50 million years ago.

Litter Box

Tempest had her kittens on May 19th. She only had two: a female brown patched tabby and& white and a male, red tabby and white. Mother and kittens are doing well.

Sugar had four kittens last night on May 30th. We are unsure of the sex of one of the kittens, but as of now this is what we have: red and white male, red tabby male, blue and white(?), and one solid blue female (she might be a blue-cream need a little more time to see if the cream shows up more).

Based on the weight charts I suspect that Gracie is pregnant and due any time. Sophia was just bred about 2 weeks ago. For more information, please visit our website . Review the pages under the Placement tab and if you would like to be considered for one of our Persian kittens, please fill out and submit the on-line Application.

In our Successful Aging Series, we're tackling issues of mobility in senior companion animals. Immobility and pain, often due to arthritis, are all too commonplace in dogs and cats reaching their "Golden Years". In this post, Dr. Jane shares exactly how these problems develop and how they go from acute episodes to chronic disease. Fortunately, there are proactive measures pet parents can take to help diminish the likelihood of these problems becoming big-time concerns for their pet kids later in life.

Cat O'Month
Email received May 1, 2012

Susan:

These are my three rescue girls and Romi, the beautiful cream I got in Michigan. Himi mother and daughter from Cincinnati area that I adopted one year ago. They are nine and ten years old. They are enjoying life here in my home. And beautiful little Mia, my blue and white girl who is now 13 years old. She is so sweet and loves to be touching me. She sleeps beside my pillow at night and often places her paw on my hand.

Romi
Romi is the cream neutered male who I adopted from a Michigan shelter. My vet guesses that he is about six years old. Romi is very affectionate, and he enjoys being groomed and bathed! He is a huge ball of beautiful fur.

I would love for you to use any or all of them. My intention is to rescue older kitties because people don't seem to want them. They can have more health problems. I have had to make myself STOP looking on Petfinder.com because I just can't take care of more at this time. I have my hands (and litter pans) full!!!! I also have two Shih Tzu brothers who are not rescues but are both 12 years old, so I do know that the time will come when I have to decide what is best for each of my wonderful babies, as far as, their end-of-life issues. But for now, my goal every day is to love them, pamper them, as best I can.

Susan, I really enjoy your newsletter and FB page, hope I can meet you some time. I live in Cardington, Ohio.
