Pelaqita Persians
March 1, 2013
    Dear

The weather has been all over the place the past 30 days.  One day it is cold and snowing and the next day it is in the 50's and the snow all melts off.

Recently, I had a request to write about how I came up with our cattery name "Pelaqita."    So, how I arrived at the weird name of Pelaqita is that.....

When I first got the paperwork from the Cat Fanciers' Association to register a cattery name, I had no idea of what name to use other than I wanted something unique and something short.  Then I remembered my Nana's cat, Pelaqita, who I spent many hours with as a young child and teenager.  I have no idea what the word means, but I do remember my Nana telling me at one time that it was a Hawaiian word. Of course, I had no idea how to spell it and tried to sound it out: pela (like bella with a "p") qi (like "Key"), ta (self-explanatory).  At that time, I also had no idea that in the Hawaiian language there is no "q".  :-)   However, once I received approval for my cattery name from the CFA it would have been tough to change it and it would not be retroactive to any of my previous kittens or cats, so I never fixed the mistake.

Sometimes it 's hard when you have suffered from a severe closed head injury and its the little things that do not come back, couple that with the fact that I NEVER (even as a child in school) was able to sound out words and you can see why I mangled the name of my Nana's cat.    :-)

Mild Mannered Moochi

Starwood Magazine, March 2013
By: Barbara Fischler

In Starwood's Water's Edge is a Persian cat named Moochi who lives with his family, Cindy and Lloyd McHoes. Like all Persians, Moochi is an extremely laid back and sociable cat, but to make things interesting he keeps a few funny habits up his paw, odd-but-endearing habits that seem to come with the breed.

Cats and High Places
By:  Susan MacArthur

As a cat owner, you may have noticed that cats prefer high places whether they are looking to take a nap, play or just hang out. While we may never really know the real reasons(s) why cats prefer high places, here are a few theories:

Cats Awake at Night -  Reducing Nocturnal Activity
By:  Susan MacArthur

Cats are nocturnal and prefer to be up at night and can sleep up to 16 hours a day. One of the most common complaints that veterinarians get is that their cat is keeping them up at night. There are several things you can do to help:

Cat O'Month

Viola Rose and her

Susan:

My mom looks like she was sleeping in this picture, but she was really trying to hold as still and quiet as possible, so Viola Rose, my 4-month-old calico Persian kitten, wouldn't stir from her position, having draped herself over her Grandma's neck.

Viola Rose is a 6 month old Calico Persian, born July 28th, 2012.  I adopted her from Persians Plus Rescue in Oak, PA on December 26th.  She is my dream cat, as I have wanted to adopt a Calico Persian for years.  I was so happy to be able to adopt her from a rescue, as Persian kittens rarely end up in rescue.  In the past year, I had lost two of my Persian cats: one to cancer, one to old age and degenerative myelopathy.  There is no better tonic for a broken heart than a bouncy little fluffy kitten.

Viola Rose's beauty is breathtaking, but she is as pretty on the inside as on the outside.  She is incredibly affectionate and LOVES it when I rub her face.  When I sit down with her on the sofa, she drapes herself across my neck and shoulders and purrs her head off.  She snuggles up with both my adult Himalayan cats.  At first, they were apprehensive about her cuddling, but Viola Rose assured them that snuggling up for naps is how it's done in the kitten world.  She is very persuasive and great at making friends with other cats!

Did You Know?
Mincho went up a tree in Argentina and did not come down until she died 6 years later.  While up the tree, she managed to have three litters of kittens with equally ambitious dads.

A cat's normal body temperature is approximately 101.5 degrees.

A litter of kittens can have more than one father.

Many cats do not have eyelashes.

"...But nature does not say that cats are more valuable than mice; nature makes no remark on the subject. She does not even say that the cat is enviable or the mouse pitiable. We think the cat superior because we have (or most of us have) a particular philosophy to the effect that life is better than death. But if the mouse were a German pessimist mouse, he might not think that the cat had beaten him at all. He might think he had beaten the cat by getting to the grave first." ~ Gilbert Keith Chesterton
