Pelaqita Persians
March 1, 2016
John and I took Bishop and MayMay to the Kittyhawk show in Dayton, Ohio a few weeks ago and both did well. Bishop made two finals and gained 50 Grand Champion points! MayMay qualified for her Champion title, and she also received 6 Grand Champion points. A cat needs 200 points to earn a Grand Champion title (meaning they have defeated 200 cats). We are so proud of both Bishop and MayMay.

In this issue, we have few items to cover. Because it is early spring time, we are getting many requests for kittens. Therefore, I thought it timely to write an article about breeders and what to look for.

We have also included a product review of Ebi Fountains - I love this water fountain and highly recommend this company and its products. They truly are works of art!

The last article is one near and dear to my heart, why the hobby of showing cats (or dogs) is declining. This article was written by a dog breeder/show person, and he graciously gave me permission to use his material. I hope this article will remind breeders and show enthusiasts why we are doing what we do and to encourage new people to take up the hobby.

Have a great St. Paddy's Day!
Persian Cat Breeders
Are you confused by all the claims, fancy websites, titles, and pretty pictures when looking for a new kitten or cat? If you are do not feel bad, the majority of people looking for a new pet feel this way. To learn more about what to look for, what questions to ask yourself, click on the "Read More" link.

Ebi Fountains
I have a difficult cat. Funfetti does not like, and will not drink from, a water bottle. After many days of trying to get Funfetti to switch from a bowl to a water bottle, I finally gave up. She is one stubborn cat. The problem with a water bowl is if you have a cat like Funfetti who likes to "Ruff Dive" this can create mess, damp skin and fur, and in Funfetti's case she developed a skin infection from always having damp hair on her face, chin, neck and chest. This is when I finally started to research water fountains. The majority of water fountains that I found would just not work for a Persian who liked to put her whole face and ruff into the water bowl part of a traditional fountain. Then, I found Ebi Fountains on the internet. I liked what I saw and have gotten my first water fountain from this company. Ebi Fountains is the creation of Eberhard Basler a ceramic artist and Vera Basler and based in Palm Harbor, Florida.

The Harsh Truth About Why Our Sport Is Dying
As many of you know, in the late 1980's I showed, trained and bred German Shepherd Dogs. After my car accident and the physical difficulties I had working with the larger dogs, hauling all the large equipment needed for dog shows, I made the difficult decision to stop showing and breeding dogs. I then had the bright idea to show Persian cats. So, I feel I am uniquely qualified to offer my opinion on being a "newbie" more than once in my chosen breed and species. While most show people are kind, welcoming and helpful; many are not. I, too, had difficulty buying show-quality animals when I was first starting out. I have been sold a Persian cat from a breeder that advertised "PKD tested negative" for all breeding animals; only to test my cat several months later and find out the cat was positive for the PKD1 gene. I was devastated. My experience is that it takes about five years for the established breeders to take a newbie seriously which is a shame. I totally agree with Drew (who wrote the article, click on the link below to read it), we must nurture and guide newbies as this is where the future of our breed is once us oldtimers are gone.

Did You Know?
Ancient Egyptians believed that cats' eyes reflected the sun, even during darkness when the sun was down.

Sir Winston Churchill shared his dinner table with his cat, Jock. If Jock failed to show for mealtime, Churchill would not begin eating until the cat was rounded up and sitting at the table. Jock was included in Churchill's will.

Residents in Italy welcomed a sneezing cat because it was a good omen. Other European cultures believed that if a cat sneezed three times in a row, the owner would come down with a cold.

If there are ten cats on a boat and one jumps off, how many cats are left on the boat? None! They were all copy cats.

"There is the little matter of disposal of droppings in which the cat is far ahead of its rivals. The dog is somehow thrilled by what he or any of his friends have produced, hates to leave it, adores smelling it, and sometimes eats it…. The cat covers it up if he can...." ~ Paul Gallico
