Hello    -

I am so very glad that winter is finally over.  The past week we have had beautiful weather, although the past few days have been rainy.

My 82-year-old aunt (my mother's older sister) came for a visit last week.  I enjoyed her visit so very much.  She is so full of life and laughter.

Aunt Carole getting
Here is a picture of my Aunt Carole (named after Carole Lombard, the actress) getting "kisses" from our miniature donkey, Rumba.  When you say the word "kisses" to Rumba, he raises his head and nuzzles your face.  He is just so cute when he does this.  Of course, he is a donkey and is very stubborn and hates the farrier!

Aunt Carole wanted a picture of her sitting on my husband's horse, Mac.  I think she wanted to make her kids nervous!  Mac is a "bomb-proof" horse which means he is very gentle, and nothing ever gets to him, the perfect horse for beginners, children, and the disabled.  I knew that Aunt Carole would be safe on Mac.  I know that she enjoyed all of our critters that we have here.

Our new chicks arrived about a week ago.  We have 15 chicks of 3 different breeds.  Two of the breeds are only hens, the other breed (Black Cochin), we have no idea what mixture of hens and roosters we may end up with.  Currently, they are in the garage in an enclosure, under a heat lamp.  They will stay in the garage until they become big enough to go outside and up to the chicken coop with the other birds.

We have one kitten left from the three litters that we had in March.  The black & hi-white male from Sophia/ESPY breeding is available.  Although, if I do not find the perfect home for him, I may keep him, neuter him (I do not need another boy) and then show him.  He is really nice and flashy.
Vaccines for Cats: We Need to Stop Overvaccinating
by:   Lisa A. Pierson, DVM

A vaccination is a preparation of microorganisms (pathogens), such as viruses or bacteria, that is administered to produce or increase immunity to a particular disease. There can be no disputing that vaccines save lives but they also have some serious side effects which will be discussed on this webpage.

Please note that the diseases we most commonly vaccinate cats for are caused by viruses - not bacteria. While it is difficult to induce long-term immunity to bacterial infections, vaccines targeted toward viruses are much more efficient at conferring long-term immunity in the recipient.

Cats and Hairballs – National Hairball Awareness Day
By:   Susan MacArthur

All cat owners have experienced their feline friend's "gift" – the hairball. The last Friday in April is "National Hairball Awareness Day" and is an important day to recognize. I am not sure of the origin of this "special day", but I found references to it beginning in 2011.

Hairballs are not just an annoying habit, but can be a sign of illness in your cat. Vomiting, whether it is a hairball, food, or liquid and/or foam are serious!

Cat O'The Month

Persian cat reading the computer
Hi,

Just a short note. Every time I go to use my computer, Oscar runs over to me and he has to sit right in front of me and waits for the screen to light up.

He makes me have to look around him to see what I am doing. He even lies down with his paws on the keys. If I don't do anything right away, he turns around and looks at me like "let's get going".

He makes me laugh and if I'm in a bad mood, he makes it go away. He is a rescue - let's just say he was a mess when we saw him. She wanted a $100.00 for him -  I did not care, just gave it to her and we got him out of there. When we got him home. We thought we were bringing him home just to keep him comfortable till the end. Then I saw a little sparkle in his eyes and he did a little better each day. And now he is one of the best and loving kitties I have ever had. He is a red kitty with copper eyes. The vet said he is about 4 years old.

Thank You (Oscars) Mom Nancy.

DID YOU KNOW?
What does a cat call a bowl of mice? A purrfect meal.

A cat will kill its prey based on movement, but may not necessarily recognize that prey as food. Recognizing the prey as food is a learned behavior.

"I think one reason we admire cats, those of us who do, is their proficience in one-upmanship. They always seem to come out on top, no matter what they are doing--or pretend to do. Rarely do you see a cat discomfited. They have no conscience, and they never regret. Maybe we secretly envy them." ~ Barbara Webster, from "Creatures and Contentments"
