Pelaqita Persians
November 1, 2010
The leaves on our trees are just about gone now and that same view of our pasture that we took just a few short weeks ago looks drab. While we still have grass in our pasture for our two horses, Monte and Rocket; as well as the miniature donkey, Jason; and the two goats, Allie and Elway (yes, after John Elway), those poor trees sure do look bare and you can tell that Fall has come. I am not quite sure that I am ready for winter, but I am happy that fall is here. The kittens are litter box trained have been let loose in the house the past few days. They have been allowed to meet Ace our German Shepherd Dog who is the greatest nursemaid in the world.

In Negotiations

We are in negotiations with a veterinarian to write an article for our newsletter about cats every few months.

Cross your fingers for luck that this works out. It is official! Dignity is his name. He will be on his way to our home (Nov. 4th), and he will be bringing along a traveling companion, a tortie female kitten (named Sugar). His sire is GC RW Cacao Dawson's Creek and his mom is GC Brannaway Betursweetbippy of Cacao.

Dignity is a brown tabby and white boy and he just received the necessary points to get his Grand Champion title on October 30th. Both of these cats will complement our breeding program.

Toy or Not to Toy?
Toy or Teacup Persian cats
First, it is important to understand what the breed standard is for a Persian cat before we talk about what a "toy" or "teacup" Persian is. According to the Cat Fanciers' Association Persian breed standard "the ideal Persian should present an impression of a heavily boned ... and ... of cobby type, low on the legs, broad and deep through the chest, equally massive across the shoulders and rump, with a well-rounded mid-section and level back. Good muscle tone with no evidence of obesity. Large or medium in size."

Persian Cats & Anesthesia
It is always a good idea to find a veterinarian who understands the unique issues with cats and anesthesia, especially Persian cats. Cats, (and Persian cats specifically) do not do well with the older IV (intravenous) anesthesias. Anesthesia is flushed from the body through the kidneys. In many instances, in veterinary practices where the older types of anesthesia are still being used, typically, the cat will wake up from surgery appearing to recover and return home and then die of respiratory failure which is heart-wrenching for all concerned.

Did You Know?
Cats lick people as a sign of affection.

Cats, especially older cats, can get cancer. Many times this disease can be successfully treated.

"A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way." ~ Mark Twain

Persians are the most popular breed of cat in North America.

Just like us, cats should have their teeth seen to in order to maintain healthy gums and oral hygiene. Once they are adults, have your veterinarian check them out to see if they need a cleaning.

If you sneeze whenever you are around cats chances are it is the salvia on their fur that you are reacting to.

"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats." ~ Albert Schweitzer

"Cat said, 'I am not a friend, and I am not a Servant. I am the Cat who walks by himself, and I wish to come into your Cave.'" ~ Rudyard Kipling, from the "Just-So Stories"

Thirty-three percent of U.S. household (or 38.2 million) own at least one cat. (Humane Society -survey 2009-2010).

"If a dog jumps in your lap, it is because he is fond of you; but if a cat does the same thing, it is because your lap is warmer." ~ Alfred North Whitehead

Persian cats come in many colors. The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) the world's largest registry organization divides the Persian breed into seven color divisions for purposes of registration and competition: solid, silver and golden, shaded and smoke, tabby, particolor, bi-color, and all the colors in the Himalayan breed which is also a Persian. Hi, Susan....

I am totally Blessed to have Jacob and Rachel as pets ... as well, they are blessed to have me as their owner ... haha. They are my 2 babies that are filled with energy and love. Jake always at my feet when I'm awake and Rachel near me at night in the bed. They both have great personalities that I have never seen in cats. They both like to get between me and the computer monitor for attention. ..I think they're a little jealous of it.

Thanks again Susan for these 2 gifts in my life ... everyone that comes to my house loves them .... they are great with company and surprisingly, great with kids.

Love Steve, Jacob n' Rachel L.
