Pelaqita Persians Newsletter
November 1, 2013

Hello    -

The month of November brings us Thanksgiving, and most of us will be spending time with family members and hopefully, thinking about what we are thankful for this holiday season.  In keeping with being thankful, for those of you that may have had a pet cross the Rainbow Bridge this past year and if you would like to share, please send me a photo of that pet (it does not have to be a Persian cat or even a cat) and a story about what made that pet special to you and why you are thankful for having that pet in your life.  We will be putting those photos and your stories onto our Rainbow Bridge page of our website and featuring them in our December 1st Newsletter.  You do not have to include any personal information other than the first name, the first letter of the last name, city and/or state you live in, and the name of your pet and breed of your pet.  Please send the photo and your story to   susan@pelaqitapersians.com

We wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Once again it is time to let the owners of cats and Persians, in particular, know about Anesthesia and having a frank discussion with their veterinarian about the anesthesia protocol they intend to use on your cat and the dangers of said protocols.  In the past several years, there have been advances in anesthesia, and anesthesia protocols as well as new studies that found that cats and dogs "do" feel pain and therefore, they do need some pain medication (analgesic) depending on the type of surgery performed.  We tasked our wonderful veterinarian to update our article on Anesthesia and Persian cats, and that article is contained in this newsletter.  We greatly appreciate that Dr. Williams took the time to do this for us.

You think you have hairball problems?  Think again, this YouTube video shows Colonel Meow the Guinness Book of World Records (2014) for having the longest fur.  Check it out by clicking this YouTube link or by clicking on the video below.

Cats and Cages
by:   Susan MacArthur

Many cat breeder websites boast about being a "cage-less" or "cage free" cattery – implying that they allow ALL their cats to run free in their entire home. Those breeders talk about how their kittens are "raised underfoot" in the home. While it sounds impressive that all their cats have the run of their entire home, is it an accurate statement? Let's take a look at why the term "cage-less" or "cage free" cattery may be just a bit misleading, and in my opinion, that breeder is irresponsible about the lives of the cats and kittens under their care. Nobody wants to see a cat living its entire life in a cage. However, that is not what responsible breeders do. Responsible breeders are always moving cats from one enclosure to another, rearranging which cat is housed with another one, and letting a few cats run the home.

Persian Cats and Anesthesia

It is always a good idea to find a veterinarian who understands the unique issues with cats and anesthesia, especially Persian cats. Cats, (and Persian cats specifically) do not do well with the older IV (intravenous) anesthesias. Anesthesia is flushed from the body through the kidneys. In many instances, in veterinary practices where the older types of anesthesia are still being used, typically, the cat will wake up from surgery appearing to recover and return home and then die of respiratory failure which is heart-wrenching for all concerned.

When considering surgery for your cat, discuss the surgical procedure including the anesthesia protocol with your veterinarian to determine what will be done and what drugs will be used. Most recommendations will include the following:

Cat O'The Month

Cream and White Persian cat
Hi,

This is Pookie Petar. We rescued him from the Schoharie, NY animal shelter. At two months of age Pookie Petar was put in a box, taken for a car ride and tossed out the window. A 2nd car ran over the box. A good Samaritan saw this happen and stopped because they saw something pop out of the box. This person ran right away to the vet with the cat.

Pookie Petar was very close to death. The car crushed his body breaking his pelvis. We are told the entire time of examination and recovery Pookie Petar never stopped purring and licking/kissing everyone.

Pookie Petar is now 6 months old and has been in his new home for over one month. He is the best little boy, plays, eats well, very very happy. Let's just say this has turned into a happily ever after story.

Is your cat the life of any gathering? Send us the picture. You get the idea. We thought it would be fun to show a Cat of the Month photo every month which will be posted in our newsletter. If you submit a picture, please include your full name (this information is just for us and will not be shared), the name, age or date of birth, color, and breed of your cat. If there are other animals in the picture, please let us know who or what is appearing with your cat. You MUST be the owner of the picture in order to submit the picture to us. The cat does NOT need to be a Persian cat, nor does it have to be a purebred. We just want to make this fun. Send the pictures to:    susan@pelaqitapersians.com
