Pelaqita Persians
November 1, 2015
It has been a very busy, and sometimes, a heartbreaking month for John and I.

We had to make the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize our 6 1/2-year-old Irish Wolfhound, Phelan, on October 18, 2015. Phelan has been very ill for over two months and getting worse, including significant weight loss. On October 17th, he suddenly started having breathing difficulties, and we knew it was time. Our video tribute to Phelan is below.

On October 24, 2015, our five-month-old kitten, Ralph Mouth, suddenly lost the use of his hind legs. We took him to the vet and on her recommendation, took him to MedVet (a specialty clinic) where Ralph was admitted for testing. After exhaustive procedures both for Ralph and to our pocketbook, the tests revealed no definitive diagnosis. They think it is one of two issues: (1) a very rare cancer (rare for it to occur in a kitten), or (2) a fibrocartilaginous emboli-FCE (similar to a stroke but with connective tissue instead of a blood clot) which has caused the swelling in the spinal cord itself at the T13 and L1 disc. The way for the vets to back into the correct diagnosis is if Ralph stays the same or shows improvement. If he stays the same (or gets worse), it is cancer and euthanasia is recommended. If Ralph shows signs of improvement, then it was a spinal stroke and recovery is possible, albeit a long one.

On October 28th and 29th, Millie's two kittens went to their new homes. Very a busy couple of days for us. :-) Good news!!! I brought Ralph into our living room yesterday afternoon and placed him in the middle of the carpet. As Ralph walked forward, he moved his left back leg (before he would just drag his back legs uselessly behind him) and kind of moved the right one. He is still non-weight bearing, but we are so encouraged by Ralph showing signs of improvement. He is also using the litter box and grooming/bathing himself again.

During the upcoming Holiday season remember there is always cause for wonders and miracles to happen if you believe! Ralph's improvement reflects the many, many prayers that all of you have sent his way. I will be forever grateful to all of you for your prayers, kind words, and also financial donations to his on-going medical bills.

Cat Funny - My husband, John, just came back in from the barn and feeding/watering the outside critters (horses, mini-donkeys, chickens, and guinea hens). He said, "I think one of the chickens has decided she is a cat." I looked at him questioningly, and he replied, "She is living in the cat room with the barn cats!" Only in our home would we have species confused animals. lol.

Since it is that time of year, we are re-printing our Holiday Safety Tips below.

While it is not yet November, have a great Thanksgiving!

First Vet Visit
The day you bring home your kitten is likely to be your kitten's first big life adventure. How you introduce him to his new home, family, and veterinarian can set the tone for the rest of his life. Here are a few tips to help your new kitten adjust to their new veterinarian, making sure it is an enjoyable experience for him and ensure happy repeat visits.

Did You Know?
A cat's normal body temperature is approximately 101.5 degrees. It is not unusual to have their temperature go up at times of stress (i.e., being at the veterinarian).

Try hanging an orange or lemon scented air freshener in the inner branches of the Christmas tree, if your cat is a "seasonal" climber.

While Persians tend to want to stay close to the ground (except mine), other breeds of cats love high places. They share this love with Leopards and Jaguars who sleep in trees. If a cat begins to fall, his inner ear canal (which controls balance) will help him to right himself and land on his feet.

Cat Joke - What happens when two cats want the same dish of food? They get into a phssssst fight!
