Happy Fall

Well, Fall sure came in with a hurry, at least here it did!

As promised, here is a picture of my husband, John's new horse. His name is "Mac" and he is a six-year-old Appaloosa gelding (meaning neutered in cat terms). He is a very gentle horse, and we enjoy having him as an addition to our family.

Last weekend, we had some friends over, and they brought their children and grandchildren with them to visit all our animals. Of course, once again, the miniature donkey, Jason, was the hit of the day! However, everyone rode Mac, and he was a very willing and gentle participant.

It is that time of year that we need to keep in mind that with the advent of the holiday season, we should keep a close eye on our pets to prevent possible life-threatening situations.... see the article below "Holiday Dangers."
Finding a New Veterinarian
Once you have found a breeder you are going to get your new kitten from, it is time to choose a new veterinarian. It is not only important to have spent time researching responsible breeders, but also researching who will be responsible for providing your new kitty with medical care. How do you find a veterinarian? What questions do I ask? What do I look for in a new vet?

A common mistake is to open the telephone book or to use a search engine to find the veterinarian that is closest to your home. So what should you do?

Why We Feeed Life's Abundance
I want to share with you my experience with Life's Abundance and the reason I will be occasionally featuring cat-related articles that Dr. Jane Bicks of Life's Abundance writes for their newsletter and blog. (The purpose of this rather long-winded story below is NOT about convincing anyone to change their pet's diet or to buy Life's Abundance food, it is my experience with the pet food industry, different pet foods, and meeting Dr. Jane Bicks.)

Holiday Dangers

Special dangers await your cat during the Holidays. Thousands of cats are seriously injured and/or become deathly ill, even die each year during the Holidays which would put a damper on any Holiday season. During this busy time of year, we often forget about our four-legged family members during all the Holiday festivities. Our cats are just as curious and anxious about the Holidays as we are. Their curiosity may very well get them into serious trouble.

Did You Know?
The domestic cat is the only species which is able to hold its tail straight up while walking. All wild cats hold their tail horizontally or tucked between their legs while walking.

A cat can have 1-8 kittens per litter and are capable of having 2-3 litters each year.

A tabby cat named Dusty in 1952 set the record by having more than 420 kittens before having her last litter at the age of 18.

Cats have 230 bones in their bodies and 500 skeletal muscles - humans have 206 and 650 (respectively).

"If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat." ~ Samuel Clements

We hope to have kittens in a few months. We are anxiously waiting for our Grand Champion male, Dignity, to get a clue as to what the girls are for. It is not uncommon for Persian males to take a while to mature and want to breed, so we do not think he has an actual "problem". He is not yet two years old and that is still young (in their minds at least). Stay tuned for when Diggie gets a clue!

Cat O'Month

Susan,

When I picked up Siobhan ( don't know if you remember or not), I was concerned about how my other cat, Tigerlily, would react to no longer being the "only ONE" -- she had outlived other cats in the household. I have a 2-story house with numerous rooms, but guess where Tigerlily wanted to be ... (see photo)

This picture was taken on my screened-in back porch. Tigerlily is now 15 yrs. old and having this new kitty in the home seems to lift her spirits! I think she is much happier! It is so good to see them run and play together.
