    Dear

Persian kitten in Autumn leaves
Fall is Here!

It is hard for me to believe how fast this year has past.  It is already October and the leaves outside have been changing for a few weeks now.  We thought it might be fun to take some pictures of our last kitten, Julia, surrounded by Fall-colored leaves.  Hope you enjoy it.

During this Halloween season, please make sure your cats are kept inside to avoid any mishaps.  Halloween candy, candy wrappers, and other items can be a danger to a cat.  Be safe, and enjoy.

Antibiotic Use in Veterinary Dentistry

The management of bacterial infections and the use of antibiotics are complex subjects. This will be a brief discussion of some of the issues involved. The clinical decision to use or not use antibiotics in a particular case always resides with the attending veterinarian.

What follows is my opinion. There are others with differing opinions.

My observation is that antibiotics are vastly over used in veterinary dentistry, often to the detriment of the patient. For example, I have seen many cases in which oral tumors have been given time to grow larger and more difficult to manage because antibiotics were dispensed to see if they would resolve the problem. Antibiotics are often used in an attempt to treat undiagnosed dental and oral diseases and this simply cannot work. There are virtually no oral or dental conditions that can be effectively managed with antibiotics alone.

How to Induce Vomiting
By:  Susan MacArthur

Warning:  If you suspect that what your cat has ingested is poisonous, CALL YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY!

There is a quick and easy way to get a cat to vomit if it has ingested something that you believe may cause it harm.

You can give the cat some hydrogen peroxide. It will make the cat vomit.

Three percent hydrogen peroxide is quite effective in making dogs and cats vomit. You must be sure to use three percent peroxide and NOT hair coloring strength peroxide. Despite the label indicating that hydrogen peroxide is toxic, it is safe to give to dogs for this purpose. It is considered toxic since it induces vomiting and therefore does not stay in the body.

The appropriate dose of hydrogen peroxide is one teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. If you have an oral syringe, one teaspoon equals 5 cc or 5 ml. Once given, walk your cat around or gently shake the stomach area to mix the peroxide with the stomach contents. Vomiting should occur within 15 to 20 minutes. If no vomiting occurs, you can safely repeat the three percent hydrogen peroxide once. If it is still not effective, your dog may need to be seen by a veterinarian for stronger vomiting medication.

Once the hydrogen peroxide is given, it is important to watch your pet so that he does not re-ingest the substance. If there is concern about toxicity, collect and take a sample of the vomitus to your veterinarian.

Cat O'Month

Brown Tabby & White and Flame Point cats
I have never seen a cat lay flat down like this little guy!! He's my foster kitty and is just getting so comfortable here in his new foster home. He's laying flat down on his stomach with his legs sticking straight out behind him!

The other pic I would like to capture is of him CLIMBING very carefully up my wooden shutters, quiet as a mouse. I just need to catch him in the act with my camera.

Hope today is a headache free day for you!

Color:  Brown Tabby & White (the other one is a flame point)

Is your cat the life of any gathering? Send us the picture. You get the idea. We thought it would be fun to show a Cat of the Month photo every month which will be posted in our newsletter. If you submit a picture, please include your full name (this information is just for us and will not be shared), the name, age or date of birth, color, and breed of your cat. If there are other animals in the picture, please let us know who or what is appearing with your cat. You MUST be the owner of the picture in order to submit the picture to us. The cat does NOT need to be a Persian cat, nor does it have to be a purebred. We just want to make this fun.
