Feline Asthma
by:   Dr. Jane Bicks

One of the many health problems humans and cats share is also one of the less publicized medical complaints of cats: feline asthma. Although allergies are positively correlated with the disease, veterinary scientists remain baffled by the causes of this illness. In the latest from Dr. Jane, our holistic veterinarian briefly examines the symptoms, potential causes, progression and treatments (including alternative therapies), as well as coping strategies for minimizing incidents and severity of attacks. If your cat is suffering from this malady of the lungs, and you want to uncover more about this mysterious disorder, Dr. Jane is here to help you improve the life of your beloved kitty. To learn more about this condition and what the prognosis is for affected cats.

Bad Breath in Cats

By:  Susan MacArthur

In medical terms, bad breath is “halitosis”, and it is a common problem reported by pet owners to their veterinarians. Some sort of dental problem is the most common cause of bad breath in cats as bacteria, saliva, and food particles can form plaque which causes bad breath. If left untreated, the build-up of plaque can develop into gingivitis, or worse, periodontal disease which will cause the cat’s breath to be even more unpleasant.

Cat O' the Month

Blue Persian cat

Hi Susan,

Since you had no pictures this month, I wanted to send you a backup for next time.

This is my Grace Bella 8 yr Blue Tip Persian.

I rescued her 2 years ago and she would not even let you pet or brush her.  She was so frightened that bending over to pet her she would run.  She would hide anywhere her 4 1/2 pound fur ball body could hide.

Now she plays, jumps in my lap and owns the house.  Very Blessed we found her.

I have also
included a picture where my pet has a pet (s).

Thank You for all your WONDERFUL Information,

Martha E. Seipel

Is your cat the life of any gathering? Send us the picture. You get the idea. We thought it would be fun to show a Cat of the Month photo every month which will be posted in our newsletter. If you submit a picture, please include your full name (this information is just for us and will not be shared), the name, age or date of birth, color, and breed of your cat. If there are other animals in the picture, please let us know who or what is appearing with your cat. You MUST be the owner of the picture in order to submit the picture to us. The cat does NOT need to be a Persian cat, nor does it have to be a purebred. We just want to make this fun.

Did You Know?
Cats were working for the British mail service as early as 1868. In their official status, they protected packages, which often contained perishable food, from certain destruction by free-roaming rodents. The Controller of London's Money Order Office allotted a weekly stipend for each efficient mouser employed at museums and similar establishments. Over one century's worth of correspondence between the post office and the Controller, about regular cat care cost increases, was preserved and published in a book.

Don't be alarmed when your cat brings you gifts of birds, mice or other wild critters. This is a natural part of their gift ritual, and they do it to please you.

"I saw the most beautiful cat today. It was sitting by the side of the road, its two front feet neatly and graciously together. Then it gravely swished around its tail to completely encircle itself. It was so fit and beautifully neat, that gesture, and so self-satisfied, so complacent." ~ Ann Morrow Lindbergh
