Pelaqita Persians
August 1, 2015
It is hard to believe that summer is over, most kids are back at school, and we are looking towards Fall. How the year has flown by.

All of our kittens have gone to their new homes (except for the youngest litter of Millie's two kittens). By all reports the older kittens have settled in well to their new homes and the kittens are captivating their owners' hearts.

Sophia in her new home

Sophia was retired from breeding and she has been re-homed with Thom and Robin I. of Ohio. After a few days of being a bit scared and wanting to hide under furniture, Sophia has settled in and met the other inhabitants of the household. Doesn't she look happy and settled into her new home?

Everyone have a great Labor Day!
Teach a Child to Hold a Cat
I have heard many cat owners say that their cat does not like to be held by their children and what are they to do? Children do not innately know how to properly hold a cat, recognize when the cat has had enough, or when to allow a cat “space and alone time”. Here are a few suggestions on how to teach your child to hold a cat correctly and to improve your cat’s patience as well.

The Special Bond Between Cats and Women
By: Dr. Jane Bicks, DVM

Have you ever wondered why women and cats have such strong relationships? Specifically, why some women (a very few, mind you) tend to collect large numbers of cats? While you’ve heard the term “crazy cat lady”, you never hear of “crazy gerbil ladies” or “crazy ferret ladies”!

Did You Know?
What drinks milk, meows, and has eight legs? An octo-puss!

Persians cats can have what is known as a "flat" face (which is what the breed standard calls for). The other type of face is known as the "doll" face or is sometimes referred to as a "long-nosed" Persian. Neither has more or less health issues, eye weepage problems or breathing issues.

Ailurophilia is the "love of cats".

Cat O'Month
Greeting,

First off I want to say I enjoy reading and receiving your monthly newsletters. I especially enjoyed this month's newsletter (August 2015). The "Cat O'Month" story sounds all too familiar to my story. I have grown up in the pet world and always had a love for animals! My mother started a grooming and boarding business when I was a very young child. This October she will celebrate being in business for 25 years. We are the largest facility in our area, with 6 full-time groomers. It has always been a love and passion of my mother's that she has passed down to her two daughters.

After graduating high school, I was on the tract to pharmacy school, when it came down to the decision that I would have to leave our family business and the pets I love, I just could not. I finished my degree in business and I am still there today. I couldn't imagine any other career. I truly love my job!! As for my sister, she is headed to veterinarian school.

Growing up I have been around dog breeding as my parents raised Boxers and Standard Poodles. About 8 years ago my sister purchased a French Bulldog. That was our first experience with that breed and boy did the whole family fall in love!! I love the boxers, we had one for 10 years we recently lost to cancer. But I cannot imagine life without our two French bulldogs. I can relate to the lady in this month's article on loving the smushed faces!! We hear alot from friends and family "Man you must have a thing for pets with no face," haha.

We rescued a calico Persian about 6 years ago. My heart was won from there!! In 2010, I purchased a solid white-blue eyed male with the thought of breeding. Then rescued another. This time an exotic-shorthaired. We are suckers for them!! This past year I started my cattery in my home because I love the breed so much. I acquired a proven 2 year old bi-color female and had my first litter of kittens in March.

We had three white males and one black/white bi-color female. All copper eyed. We had a ruff start at the beginning as the mother was not producing enough milk for all of them. I supplemented every few hours, leaving work all throughout the day. But I loved every minute of it!! And to see the smiles on the faces and the joy these kittens have brought their new owners just warms my heart!!

I have attached a photo of the calico that started it all. Thank you for your time and I look forward to reading many more newsletters.
