Pelaqita Persians
September 1, 2016
It has been a busy last few months around here with many delayed projects getting done the past few weeks. John and I finally got the flower bed in our front walkway back in shape, and we added a few new perennials. We have a bit more landscaping to do, but we are getting there.

The other big project was repainting the inside of our home. I was so over the color yellow. lol When we moved here in 2007, I loved the bright and cheery yellow color in every room of our home. However, I get easily bored with things, and since we are not in a position to sell and move to a new home, the less expensive option is to re-paint. So far, we have gotten the living room, hallway, foyer, cat room, and master bedroom painted. Next onto the bathrooms kitchen. Then I think I am done with "re-doing" things at least for a while.

Some changes with the newsletter:

We are no longer doing a Cat o'Month as we do not get enough submissions from readers.

In place of that feature, we would like anyone to email me with any cat related hints and tips that they think might help others. Please, people, we need your participation for this to work. :-)

Preventing Urinary Crystals in Cats
There is a saying among the veterinary profession “The solution to pollution is dilution” to explain how to prevent urinary crystal and stone formation in cats. Despite claims of specialized or prescription diets, time, observation, and numerous independent studies have shown that there are no magical diets for solving this problem and that water consumption is the key to a healthy urinary tract.

There are two types of crystals and stones that form depending on whether the urine is acidic or alkaline. Special or prescription diets limit certain minerals and also manipulate the ingredients to create a urine pH that is unfavorable to the formation of crystals and stones. Many cat owners have had multiple surgeries on their cats to remove bladder stones and then feed a specialized diet to prevent the reformation of stones or crystals. However, many owners are frustrated with the limitations of these diets and the answer to that is water and more water. Many cats are notorious for only drinking enough water to hydrate themselves, but not enough to properly flush out their organs. Just like with a woman who gets repeated urinary tract infections, our doctors tell us to “push the fluids.”

Cat Vaccinations and a Policy Change
I have seen an alarming trend with both kitten buyers and responsible kitten breeders who are not getting their kittens the most crucial and important vaccination at 16 weeks of age. Yes, I believe, based on available research, that we are over-vaccinating our pets, but if the kittens are not PROPERLY vaccinated in the first place they are at risk of getting the very illnesses we are vaccinating against. Due to this alarming trend, we are instituting a new policy.
