HB Trails

HB Trails

Remember how the Tourism people were here to film the HB Trails? You can now view the promo videos on You Tube: be prepared, they did quite a lot of eating and drinking while touring the trails!

Cycle Trails short version

HB Trails long version

Hey ,  well this week I bring you both good and not-so-good news for local bicyclists. Firstly, the long-awaited access from the Havelock Road IWay pathway down to the Karamu Stream trail, on the ‘Strawberry Patch’ side of the bridge, is now underway. This will enable a great loop-de-loop around the block, with no road crossings required, and three of the four sides being completely off-road.

Havelock Road has the dubious honour of being one of the heaviest trafficked roads in the country, and crossing it is quite frankly a nightmare at times.

Now, if you were to cross the bridge and risk taking a peek up-stream, this is what you'd be looking at:

Karamu Stream
Build us a cycle trail, oh Great Ones!

Now, isn't that a nice scenic picture? What's missing? Oh yes, a cycle path. Well good news fellas, someone's about to build you one. According to the experts (that is, the guys in the diggers on site) they'll be building a 1.4km path all the way up to Anderson Park and as far as Lipscombe Cres.

"But how will we get to it" I hear you wail. Well someone obviously thought of this too 'cause the lads also informed me that there are plans for a little bridge to span the Karamu Stream, which will enable walkers and cyclists to cross from one bank to the other. Yippee! We don't quite know who to thank for this foresight (Iway? HDC? HBRC?), but perhaps one of the local councils has a cyclist on staff in the planning dept? Thanks anyway, whomever you are!

New $20 Bonus
Monday-itis strikes in the workshop!

Mondayitis voucher
Print this voucher to cure Mondayitis!

This April I want to keep my workshop boys busy so I’ve come up with a super deal for everyone whose bike needs its annual service.

Simply drop your bike into us on a Monday for a regular or deluxe service, pick it up later in the week, and you’ll receive a $20 voucher for your troubles. This’ll keep my three guys in gainful employment, and your bike will ride like a dream again, plus you get a nice $20 bonus to spend in-store, on you-know, useful bike-stuff. Win-win, everybody happy.

Trouble brewing up the Peak? Yeah Nah...

Ash on Te Mata Peak
What could possibly go wrong?

Those familiar with our Facebook page will have seen the ‘heated’ discussion about the Te Mata Peak walking tracks, which have now been freshly labeled, as walking tracks, i.e. not for mountain bikers.

Although these tracks were always officially ‘out of bounds’ for riders they never actually had the hated ‘guy on bike with a line through him’ symbols. Well, now they do.

Our advice? Take a breath and get over it, you can still ride on the official MTB Track (it’s just yet to be re-signposted as such).

As we know, Rod Drury kindly put his hand in his pocket for a digger specifically for building more trails up the Peak. Priority was given to walking tracks, but this winter we’ll see purpose-built cycling trails starting construction there.

In my cycling utopia I’d build a whole mountain bike park up Te Mata Peak with tracks suitable for everyone including the kids. To top it off, how about an easy trail from the top of the Peak all the way down to the Village through the reserves? Dreams are free huh.

Staying in the loop

The most popular link in our last email was, you guessed it, the trail usage stats. Seems like we all want to know where everyone else is riding these days! So, here's a little update for you. Click the link below for a closer look.

- we heard it on the grapevine...

Many of our email recipients are members of the HB Multi Sport Club. We heard from our main man Brendon  that the Club is considering a name change, the proposed name: Triathlon HB. Kind of simple, we like it.

---------------------------------------------

April 1st is the scheduled start date for the work on Black Bridge to bring the cycling/ pedestrian footpath and handrail up to standard. Yay, because this is always a bit of a dodgy path!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Complimentary 6 week service

We have a policy of giving each geared bike that we sell a complimentary service in it's first 6 weeks of riding.

This service is necessary as new cables can loosen and relax, which makes changing gears difficult. We also check for any parts that are loose, which if left unattended may cause undue wear and tear on your bike.

You don't need to wait for a reminder  - if your new bike starts misbehaving please bring it back to us as soon as you can and we will give it a proper seeing-to.

Happy trails everyone!
