My husband absolutely loves birds, and feeds the ones that frequent our back yard year-round. I am always amazed by the colorful buntings, brilliant red cardinals and feisty blue jays that perch on our bird feeders, or fly over our heads while we're out enjoying a glass of wine on our back deck. We have so many great birds right here in Texas, and since Austin is on a green belt we are treated to practically everything under the sun. One holiday season a few years back we even had a pair of wild turkeys visit our back yard regularly for several weeks. Hawks have shown up, and our neighbor had a huge owl perched on his roof one evening.

I often say we build our homes by gathering our various twigs and such, just like our feathered friends build their nests. I actually got the idea for this series in June of 2016 when my seamstress posted a photo of a beautiful bird on Facebook that linked to a website with even more colorful and interesting birds. I was caught up in the images when it occurred to me that using these fabulous creatures as inspiration would make for some amazing rooms.

Then in December of 2016 I got the market highlights for the Las Vegas market and what would be trending in 2017. Low and behold, feathers were showing up everywhere. Happy accident? Mere coincidence? I think not. Renee is always telling me that we seem to be one step ahead of the trends around here, and maybe that's because we are so immersed in the world of design it's influencing us in ways we didn't even realize. I will explore some of these new products I've seen where feathers are making an appearance, but primarily I plan to focus on the beautiful color palettes that can be derived from nature and especially from birds. Some are gorgeous, some are ferocious, others are dramatic and some are just plain surreal displays of nature in all its glory.

So let's dive into this new series and find out a little bit more about birds, and then see what room creations they inspire. A whole house palette built around even just one of these birds might be even more amazing. I love whole house palettes for the consistency and order they bring to a living environment, but that for sure does not mean that it'll be boring.

We worked with our lovely clients in Dripping Springs and provided them with Hunter Douglas Vignette shades with Powerview motorization to allow for easy operation of those hard-to-reach shades over the bed. It also allowed us to create a clean, cordless look so that nothing detracts from that killer view. We accented the bay window area with simple stationary panels on medallions to add a layer of comfort and luxury without blocking the view.

During a recent visit with my brother Carter, he made this venison and bacon twist on a traditional jalapeno popper, and I absolutely loved it! I've since made them multiple times at home, and have even used different meats in place of the venison (but always wrapped in bacon, of course!).

I couldn't think of a better wine to celebrate the 4th of July with than this patriotic wine we discovered during our recent trip to Spicewood Vineyards. The Independence, as it is aptly named, is a Texas blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Aged for 12 months, this delicious red presents with notes of sour cherry, mocha and strawberries. This wine pairs perfectly with Carter's venison jalapeno poppers or a nice beef tenderloin, and at just $26.00 per bottle is a great value for this quality of wine.

HAVE A SAFE & HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

During our most recent blog campaign, we talked about the many different ways to mix in different antique and heirloom pieces with more contemporary designs, as well as how to take some of those older items and give them a complete facelift. We briefly mentioned Kim Neal, owner of FIND in our most recent post about lighting, and wanted to give her a proper shout out since her store offers so much more than that!

From the website:
"At FIND, our mission is to find things that make people feel good.
