Let's face it, we're all geeks about something. Whether it be wine, computers, sports, comics or something completely different, there always seems to be one hobby or topic of discussion that just makes your eyes light up. For me, that has always been design, even long before I went into the profession. I can remember being as young as 10 years old I was already devouring design magazines and rearranging my room several times a year. My walls were also plastered with art that was all of my own creation.

To this day I still read at least five design publications every month, not only for my own enjoyment, but also to make sure that our firm is on the cutting edge of any design trends coming down the pipeline. Just like I am sure you sports geeks out there know everything there is to know about your favorite Dallas Cowboys player, there are designers out there who continually inspire me, and whose design books I have read cover to cover several times in an effort to glean from them some of their wisdom and vast talent. These designers inspirit me, drawing me into the spaces they create and pushing me to continue to grow as a designer. These design crushes of mine make me feel actual excitement as I study their stories and spaces.

Now that I have been designing professionally for 14 years, I find myself holding back less and taking chances on the crazy ideas and images that seem to constantly flow through my imagination. I have also been fortunate enough to have more clients who are willing to take that ride with me. Some people do still tend to look at me like I have two heads, namely my husband, but often times after having some time to think about it I can get them to come around to my way of thinking. I long for the day that all of my clients will just jump right on the train with me from the get-go like my design crushes' clients have elected to do. I think the more freedom creative people are allowed in the design process, the better work the client will receive in the end.

One such designer I have a crush on is Martyn Lawrence Bullard. He stumbled into design as a boy by buying and selling antiques. His father would take him to antique markets and by 16 he had already amassed a following of people eager to purchase his wares. He used the money from this first endeavor to put himself through acting school, although his acting career never really took off. One day, a producer visiting his home asked if he would decorate their new offices, and the rest is history. That first office led to a referral to decorate another office and home, and a design career was born. Now he's giving new life to medieval castles like the Point Dume residence pictured above, and designing homes for the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, which as you can see from the video below is an absolutely amazing space!

Renee and I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Martyn at an event in Dallas in 2014 and found him to be delightful.

Be sure to sign up for our blog at winedinedesignblog.com to see who my other design crushes are, as well as some of my favorite luxury home items. We will also share some of the best recipes and wines we have tried lately. After all, life is better with good food, good wine and great design!

I've said it before and I'll say it again... nothing pulls a room together quite like pillows. They are comfortable to lean on, they add an extra layer of luxury and they are a great way to further pull color and pattern into a space. They are one of the most costly parts of interior design, but like drapery, there is just nothing that makes the same impact.

For this formal living room design, we played off the symmetrical style of the room by mirroring identical furniture pieces on each side of the fireplace. This meant a lot of pillows, which with my love of color and pattern combinations, was music to my ears!

"This superb and delicious California sparkling wine is our exclusive blend of French Colombard, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Muscat, Viognier, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines were fermented in stainless-steel tanks. Then they underwent secondary fermentation. This process creates the sparkling wine’s effervescence. This production method produces beautiful, sparkling bubbles that last and last. This sparkler should be consumed within two years of release.

Our Petit Cadeau California Semi-Seco has aromas of green apple, pear and flowers with hints of orange and anise. The flavors are fruity, with a light sweetness. This sparkling has good acidity and a pleasant medium weight on the palate with a long sweet finish. Enjoy this sparkling wine with Sushi, fruit based desserts, spicy Chinese food or a light cheese such as fresh mozzarella." - Wine Shop at Home

Produced in exactly the same manner as a $200.00 bottle of French Champagne, this "house" sparkling is just $21.50.

Robin loves to stay involved in her local church, Real Life, and the various organizations that they partner with for charity events. This past December, Real Life teamed up with Partnerships for Children for their annual Holiday Wishes program, which provides gifts to children who might otherwise not experience the joy of the holiday season and opening presents. We chose to sponsor two children, and very much enjoyed shopping for them and fulfilling their Christmas wishes.

Partnerships for Children offers many more programs to get involved with throughout the year, such as The Rainbow Room, which is a 24/7 resource center located in the Child Protective Services (CPS) office where caseworkers can gather new and essential items needed for the kids they serve whose lives are in crisis. The Rainbow Room is in constant need of new items for the more than 400 children it serves each month. They hold a " Round Up" each month to help gather supplies for the children and have made it very easy to help out. They even have an Amazon Wish list!

We invite you to visit their website at partnershipsforchildren.org to check out all the ways that you can get involved. Also feel free to check out myreallife.org to see all of the other wonderful organizations with which Real Life partners.

"Robin, I just wanted you to know that I absolutely love my bedroom. You are so so good! God has blessed you with a talent that helps people take pleasure living in their home. Thank you so much." - Judy

We would like to thank our previous client Brandi, Max Ruthven of Let's Talk Color, and Brad Roberts of Bradco Flooring for their referrals over the past two months. No other compliment compares to that of a referral.
