Where do all of those cheap, poorly-built sofas go that only withstand five years of use? Most of them end up in landfills fairly quickly since they were never made to withstand years of use. We realize that when you are young and purchasing your first home you may have no other choice than to just get some inexpensive furniture so that you have a place to sit.

By the time a client considers working with an interior designer, their focus should begin to shift to the idea of purchasing goods that will work for them for longer periods of time. This is why we tout that we are an environmentally friendly design firm and encourage our clients to purchase nicer quality furnishings.

If our clients have sentimental upholstered goods, antique goods or family heirloom pieces we will do our best to work them in to our design, or reinvent them so that they may have an extended life. By working in pieces like this it gives the space a sense of history and often times personalizes it even further to have more meaning for our clients.

We will explore this further over the next couple of months on our blog by mixing old items into new spaces and also showing you how you can reinvent pieces that you thought were destined for the dumpster to give them an updated look, and in most cases make a space look better than it ever would have been otherwise.

To kick things off we will take a look at this bold, colorful kitchen I created for one of my long time clients. She already had this vintage table and chair set and it was already painted lemon yellow, but the chairs had old upholstery on them. The set rightfully became the inspiration for this entire kitchen makeover and the bright yellow, pink and green color scheme. By adding a zebra print fabric to the seat upholstery we updated the chairs and added some edge to the whole set.

It's a rare occasion that we start working with a client that already has good quality draperies in their space, but when we do (and they will work with the new design) there is absolutely no reason to get rid of them. Such was the case with one of our Spanish Oaks clients. She wanted a relaxing yet glamorous look in her master bedroom, and she actually already had some beautiful brown drapery panels (which had admittedly seen better days).

It was easy to tell they were supposed to be traversing (moveable) panels, but they were installed on rings, which we never recommend. Not many people know that drapery treatments on rings are not supposed to be moved. The act of pulling the panels back and forth will distort the pleats and stretch the fabric (this is why the bottom is so flaired out in the above photo). Instead we had our seamstress convert them to be true traversing panels that could connect to a rod that was made specifically to handle moving drapery, all with the pull of a single cord. We used a special double rod for these so that we could also add additional sheer traversing panels underneath that she could operate separately, giving her more light control options and varying levels of privacy.

After taking down the drapery panels, we had them professionally cleaned and steamed by Austin Specialty Cleaners, a local company that specializes in cleaning higher-end drapery and upholstery. Then we had them reinstalled with the new sheer panels and much more appropriate (and larger) rod, and the transformation was complete!

I recently enjoyed a weekend in Fredericksburg with my design mastermind group (you can read more about these lovely ladies in our recent Design Crush blog post here!). While there, we visited two of the better wineries there, William Chris Wines and Kuhlman Cellars. Most of the wineries in the Texas Hill Country are boutique wineries that make small batch wines, which means try them soon or they might be gone. You can order direct from the wineries via the links above, or if you have a free Saturday or Sunday visit and participate in a tasting (both of these wineries require advance reservations).

At William Chris Wines, we enjoyed a wine and cheese tasting in their barrel room. It was wonderful and I would highly recommend scheduling this if you have out-of-town guests for a wonderful experience. The sommeliers at Kuhlmann Cellars are extremely knowledgeable as well. They have a beautiful tasting room and the tasting at this winery is very educational. The winner for me overall was Kuhlman Cellars 2014 Barranca, which is made from a blend of Texas grapes including Mourvedre, Tempranillo, Malbec and Sangiovese.

I have noticed that Texas wines in general are spicier than California wines (kind of like our food here). The Tempranillo grape tends to be popular in Texas wine-making since it grows the best with our climate and soil.

A lot of the wineries in the Hill Country will also use California grapes in some of their bottles, but I mostly prefer recommending wines made with Texas grapes for that authentic Hill Country experience.

So take a trip with our blog around the Texas Hill Country to discover the best in Texas Wineries.

"I've been very happy with all the curtains and design help I've gotten from Robin and associates. They have been very eager to please their customers, and are very attentive to detail. They really take care of you each step of the way, making sure you get what you want and that there are no surprises at the end. How refreshing! I was so happy with the first set of curtains they did for me, I ordered two more sets for other rooms! My house looks sooo much better because of their help!!! Robin, as a designer, really knows what she is doing. I love how she uses color to really spice up the look of a room." - Phyllis
