You may not realize, but as interior designers our main objective when working with clients is to create an environment that evokes a particular mood. One of the first questions I always ask is, “What mood do you want to create?” and the most common answer that I get is peace. I am sure this is because most of us tend to have stressful and hectic work lives and when we get home we tend to want the opposite of that.

It is still something to consider, though, because if you are in a position like sales and thrive on adrenaline and conquering, perhaps an adventurous or energetic environment might be one that you will enjoy living in rather than a peaceful one.

Over the next several weeks we will explore some of the moods we are able to create through the use of color. Starting with an inspiration mood, we will provide you with some examples of the latest in home furnishings. Since our philosophy is that life is also better with good food and wine, we will include some of the latest in dishware and stemware to help set the mood in your kitchen. It seems like an appropriate time of year to dive into this with the holidays approaching, as many of the moods we will explore will be experienced as you spend time with friends and family, such as joy, peace, happiness and love.

Speaking of food and wine, if you love them and you love design, we encourage you to sign up for our blog at winedinedesignblog.com to get updates for this upcoming series straight into your inbox. As always, we will also share some of the best recipes and wines we have tried lately. After all, life is better with good food, good wine and great design!

This before and after is proof positive that trends come back around. The black and gold color scheme tends to stick around longer than most. This room has touches of black, brown and gold, and is an example of a huge mood transformation I did for a bachelor probably 10 years ago. As you can see, he had a depressing feeling bedroom with a mirrored wall that made the whole room feel very dated. Instead of doing away with the mirrored wall, I decided to use it to our advantage and added a sheer drape in front of it. By adding a chandelier over the bed, the light reflected off of the glass and changed this bedroom from a rather depressing space into a very romantic and inticing one.

On a related note, my bachelor client ended up getting engaged a year or so later. Could it have possibly had anything to do with his bedroom? I would like to think so.

The mirliton (also known as chayote) is a very popular squash in New Orleans. It is described as having a very slightly sweet or tangy taste, and is especially delicous when paired with seafood as with this stuffing from Chef Mike.

"Our Joy Cellars 2015 Sauvignon Blanc has a lot of flower fragrances in the attack. The fresh flower aromas such as hyacinth and lilac, are very intense. Citrus like grapefruit, lime and lemon play a strong role. Toward the end, apricot and almond characters come forward. In the mouth, this short to medium-bodied wine shows a good amount of acidity at the very beginning. Grapefruit is a very typical aroma in Sauvignon Blanc and its flavors are showcased in the mouth.

This is a very good example of a classic Sauvignon Blanc, best enjoyed with shellfish, sushi, baked or grilled fish or poultry. "
