Spotlight on The African Leadership Academy
The African Leadership Academy (ALA) is a residential high school outside of Johannesburg that is rigorously preparing Africa’s next generation of leaders. The Honors College has formed a partnership with the ALA which will leverage the collective strength of Africa's top high school and the top Honors College in the United States.
The first students will be arriving in the Fall for four years in the Honors College! Get ready to show them a warm welcome! In the meantime, you can

Smithsonian Open Door Externship
Spend three weeks exploring Smithsonian Museums behind the scenes and earn Honors course credit while living in Washington, D.C. May 13-30. Open to all majors – no prerequisites or previous experience required. Costs: $540 program fee, $1850 housing fee and UofSC tuition. 3 SCHC credit hours.

Summer 2019 ethnographic research project
This summer project in Detroit, Michigan will emphasize the experiences that low-income people of color and immigrants have with urban “revitalization.” Students may earn 8 university credits for participation.

South Caroliniana Library Student Assistant
Work 15 hours per week each assisting with daily library operations. Primary duties: Regular reference desk hours to assist researchers; Assist with reference questions and reproduction requests; Guide visitors in the proper handling of historic collections; Assist with entering and updating finding aid data in ArchivesSpace; Retrieve and reshelve requested items; Use circulation software to check in items sent from off-site storage locations. Secondary duties: Help prepare incoming published materials for permanent storage; Assist with the arrangement and description of incoming manuscript collections, as needed; Assist with small in-house conservation projects, such as building housings for fragile volumes; Help update and maintain materials housed in vertical file collections. Preferred qualifications: Familiarity with special collections libraries and the demonstrated ability to handle rare and historic items with care. Global Carolina offers multiple programs that pair current USC students with international students coming to the university to study. Gain valuable cross-cultural experience and earn credits towards the GLD (Graduation with Leadership Distinction). Whether helping a student to practice English, helping someone to adjust to life as a new Gamecock, or simply hanging out as friends, Global Carolina has a program for you! Programs are currently taking applications for Fall 2019.
