Indoor Studio Art

Workshops & Classes

We have installed solar panels, air conditioning and new ceiling fans to create a pleasant environment in the classroom this Summer. Come take advantage of our cool art making studio space and work with our very excellent instructors.

SCULPTURE!

Come sculpt with Anthony Alemany, one of New England’s brightest sculptor stars, in his Sculpted Portrait Workshop 3 day (SA 14) or his 8 week Sketching in Clay from Life (SA 15) class. Anthony is a dynamic instructor, teaching his approach to modeling quickly from life in water- based clay. Enjoy a totally immersive experience in classes that include demonstrations, step -by-step processes for working from a live model, and one-on one feedback.

Hand Carving: Wood or Soft Stone (SA 16) with Antoinette Schultze in her Eliot Sculpture Studio. Block out the object of choice in Wood/or Stone.  Discuss materials, the wood and grain direction, balance, and gravity of the stone and wood. Work on finishing techniques gaining and understanding of each material.

Create a portrait infused with tradition and personal significance. Try master painter Joshua Langstaff’s Portrait Painting from the Heart (SA 9) as you learn how to create a meaningful portrait of a loved one. You’ll learn how to take and select strong reference photos using a live model. Choose to work from these images or apply the skills you learn to gather reference of a loved one.

Watercolor

Honor the season of flowers in Margaret Dwyer’s Indoor Garden Party with Watercolor (SA 10). With a minimal use of drawing, allowing the paint to move and breathe, learn about color choices for mixing while resolving the issue of backgrounds in simplified, complimentary ways.

Sean Beaver’s 4 Day En Plein Air Landscape Painting Workshop (SA 1) is something to look forward to. His combination of studio demonstrations and discussions of materials and techniques along with outdoor painting on location are just what you need to learn to work faster in constantly changing light while attempting to capture the essence of a landscape.

Joshua Langstaff offers two 3 day workshops: Drawing Trees in the Landscape (SA 3) and Painting Trees in the Landscape (SA 4). Working on location, Joshua demonstrates a diverse array of techniques to capture light and shadow and create depth and texture. These are great taken as a pair. Preparatory drawings, a hallmark of master artists, can be used as an aid in the creation of your painting. Get out in nature and learn from a master artist!

For a shorter outdoor art making immersion,
Carol Morley offers a one morning Drawing in
the Garden at Sanctuary Arts (SA 5). Carol, an accomplished botanical artist, demonstrates in graphite pencil and colored pencils, but invites
you to bring your favorite medium to draw or
paint with.

Come weekly for 6 weeks to paint with Bill Paarlberg in his The Sky in Watercolor (SA 2), working outdoors in locations where the sky is a dominant feature of seascapes and landscapes. Work from quick and simple, to complex and dramatic as you learn to use the sky to make stronger compositions and add emotion to your painting.
