Free for High School students:  Introduction to Life Drawing

sanctuaryarts

We still have 3 spaces left for Introduction to Life Drawing for High School Students (SA 6), our new free class. If you know of a student who could benefit from this, please send them our way. Anthony Alemany, our wonderful sculpture instructor and gifted charcoal artist, teaches this foundational class on how to approach drawing the figure from life. Go to www.sanctuaryarts
connects.com for scholarship information.

Anthony Alemany also offers The Art of the Sculpted Portrait (SA 17), a three day workshop that runs January 27 – 29. Come sculpt a portrait from life in a total immersive experience with an instructor who is passionate about depicting the human form.

Anthony Alemany also offers Sculpting the Reclining Female Nude (SA 16) on Wednesday evenings. Using a live model, students will work through a single long pose at 1/3rd scale in a class that emphasizes the study of proportions, anatomy, and observation. Beginners are welcome.

Five Wheel Throwing Classes beginning in January

sanctuaryarts

I am very proud of the Ceramics department that has been developing here under the excellent tutelage of Sheridan Cudworth and Lindsey Howarth. The glaze firings in our gas kiln have had excellent results.

We’ve gone from one class a semester to 5 classes. Sheridan Cudworth, who teaches hand building as well as wheel throwing, has a few spaces left in her Pottery on the Wheel (SA 18 A,B & C) Tuesday morning and afternoon and Thursday evening class. Both instructors have created vibrant and exciting studio experiences for the folks who come to make messes here in our basement.

We have many more classes in Jewelry, Pottery, Bladesmithing, Botanical Illustration, Oil Painting, Sketchbook Challenge, etc. Something for everyone.

We are very lucky to have Joshua Langstaff, teaching one workshop and two classes here. Joshua studied traditional painting techniques with Juliette Aristides in her acclaimed Classical Atelier at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle and has studied with other master representational painters including Anthony Ryder, Michael Grimaldi and Steven Assael. He was also a member of Jacob Collins’ Hudson River Fellowship for its first two years. In 2009, Joshua was named one of “21 Under 31, Artists to Collect Now” by Southwest Art Magazine. His work has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine and in several art instructional books including: Lessons in Classical Drawing: Essential Techniques from Inside the Atelier by his former teacher Juliette Aristides.

Botanical Drawing, The Pleasure of Sketching, & Drawing Spring Flowers with
Carol Ann Morley

sanctuaryarts

Botanical Artist Carol Ann Morley has taught since the early days here at Sanctuary Arts. I am always impressed with the depth of the drawing experience she offers, with lots of examples, encouragement, and very practical tips on how to hold a pencil, mix colors with colored pencils, and create a stimulating visual narrative. If you want to learn how to draw in a relaxed way, try The Pleasure of Sketching (SA 1). If you want to learn how to work with colored pencils from a master, try Botanical Drawing (SA 8). If you want to play with both graphite and colored pencils, try Drawing Spring Flowers (SA 9), for four afternoons in April.
