No Art Experience Necessary!
Sanctuary Arts welcomes instructor Bruce Iverson, who offers Meditations in Ink; Introduction to Asian Brush Painting (SA 4). An artist who has specialized in Asian Brush Painting (Sumi-e in Japan) since 1072, Bruce has traveled to China to gain a better understanding of the context of brush painting. His work is grounded in the 3000 year old tradition in which the tools, techniques, and philosophy of this Asian art form have had a lifelong resonance. To create his works, he uses very simple, yet elegant tools called the “Four Treasures”… hand ground sumi ink, bamboo brushes, a carved inkstone and handmade rice papers.

Beuatiful Drawing is its Own Reward
Drawing is a great way to train your eye as you attempt to capture and interpret visual information. Beautiful drawing is it’s own reward as well as an essential prerequisite for painting in any medium or for sketching ideas for 3 dimensional form. Carol Ann Morley is our drawing specialist. She offers Building Drawing Skills (SA 2) for students who wish to explore the fundamentals of representational drawing in a relaxed, non-judgmental atmosphere. A well-known botanical illustrator, Carol also offers Botanical Drawing (SA 11) and Drawing Spring Flowers (SA 12). Carol has the ability to reach each student at their own level and work with them to achieve stellar results. A beautiful camaraderie develops in her classes as students endeavor to express themselves.

Drawing the Figure & Classical Still Life Techniques
Figure and Still Life painter Sydney Bella Sparrow offers Drawing the Figure (SA 7). Sydney has developed a classroom curriculum that teaches students step-by-step the rigors of figure drawing. This difficult subject is broken down into easy to assimilate methods that, beginning with linear block-ins, build to create full values and form. Sydney’s Classical Still Life Techniques (SA 6) also begins with the process of creating line drawings, which are then transferred to painting surfaces where monochromatic underpaintings are completed before a full range of color is mixed and applied. Sydney is a great demonstrator and teacher of color mixing!
We have a wonderful array of courses to suit the discerning pallette for a Winter of lively, artful learning. We welcome you to join us!
