DIRECTOR'S NOTES
"Return from Africa" by Christopher Gowell painted in Joshua Langstaff's class
Sanctuary Arts is lucky to have some great figure artists teaching here. I’ve always thought that if you can learn to create beautiful and powerful work with the figure, you can do anything. Working with the figure trains your eye and hand. Your powers of observation are honed and you are ready to conquer whatever narrative you wish to depict.
SCULPTURE
with
Anthony
Alemany

If clay is your preferred medium, Anthony Alemany offers Sketching in Clay from Life (SA 15). Classes include armature building, demonstrations and one-on-one feedback as you learn to capture the gesture and essence of the pose. Anthony also offers Anatomy of the Human Head (SA 16). Explore the internal structures of the head by first sculpting the skull, learning the muscles by building them, and then drawing portraits on paper from a live model as you review what you have learned.
Drawing Animal Portraits
with Carol Morley
Carol Ann Morley, our well regarded Botanical Illustrator who has been teaching at Sanctuary Arts for many years, offers Drawing Animal Portraits (SA 8). Come create portraits of your favorite animals and learn to develop your drawing from sketch to finished rendering. Work in the medium of your choice from black and white to color. Carol also offers a one day workshop- Colored Pencil Techniques (SA 11). This is open to all levels- no drawing experience needed.
Carol also offers a 5 week Colored Pencil Adventures (SA 10) for all levels of experience. Working on white, toned, and black paper, learn how to make complex textures and patterns and find out which colors harmonize together, create great contrast or recede into space.
