Director's Notes

I just finished taking En Plein Air Landscape Painting with Sean Beavers and am reminded why I started this art school. It was such a pleasure to get excellent instruction from a stellar painter who loves to share his passion and cool technical tricks with a group of would be painters who are so anxious to learn. Beautiful sites, challenging weather, marvelous demos and “story time” with images from pertinent artist’s books- this all makes for a perfect 4 day hiatus away from mundane chores and responsibilities. What joy!

I’m also taking Imaginative Drawing with Alyssa Grenning. She has an amazingly creative imagination as well as the ability to draw beautifully, and I am hoping some of it rubs off on me. I’m realizing how poor my memory is and how little time I have spent conjuring images from my mind’s eye. I’m so used to working from references, whether a model, a landscape, a still life or photography that I have allowed my imagination to stagnate. It’s an eye opening class, and I highly recommend it!

I deeply regret that Bob Ellis has decided to step down from teaching wheel throwing. He’s rejuvenated our ceramics department and successfully done a number of firings in our new gas kiln. He passes the torch to new ceramics instructors Lindsey Howarth and Sheridan Cudworth who are settling in nicely with a full load of classes.
