Alastair Dacey

Alastair Dacey offers Plein Air- Break it Down (SA 5). Consider taking one of his 6 week Wednesday classes beginning July 7. Choose either a morning or an afternoon class, or both and experience classes with a painter who loves to communicate his techniques and his passion for oil painting. Explore value  and color studies, value unity and design, color relations and light effects as you focus on your own personal growth.

Carol Ann Morley

Drawing in the Garden (SA 3), a 4 week class with Carol Morley has a few spots left. Sit amongst the poppies, peonies, irises and roses and experience the pleasure of drawing flowers with colored pencils under the guidance of a gifted botanical artist. Explore techniques to capture groups of flowers as well as their individual features in some of the loveliest gardens in the seacoast area.

Director's Notes:

I'm pleased to let you all know that Joshua Langstaff is moving back to our area and will be teaching at Sanctuary Arts this Fall. (He will also be teaching virtual classes for his former teacher, Juliet Aristides.) I was lucky to be able to study figure drawing and painting with Joshua for a time. A consummate painter, he is also an inspiring teacher. He breaks down instruction into small, comprehensible steps and is able to meet each student at their skill level and guide and encourage them. He is also very curious about the palette choices of some of the old masters, broadening our knowledge about pigments and color mixing techniques. You could tell he is passionate about painting and his passion is contagious. We all became better painters under his excellent guidance.

Remember the Ladies

"Ogunquit Cove" by Nellie Knoph

The Ogunquit Museum of American Art has a marvelous show called Remember the Ladies, Women Painters in Ogunquit, 1900 – 1950. Many of these woman artists trained at Charles Woodbury's “Summer School of Drawing and Painting” and Hamilton Easter Field's “Summer School of Graphic Arts. My favorite artist was Nellie Knopf, whose brushwork, composition and jewel tones were simply ravishing.

Tom Glover's Plein Air in the Cove (SA 2) visits this show and will paint in and around the Cove while learning about some of the painters who worked there, with a special focus on women painters who excelled in creating their work while visiting or living in and around Perkins Cove.

Bill Paarlberg

I highly recommend Bill Paarlberg's Plein Air Sketchbook Adventures (SA 6) for those interested in a fresh, spontaneous approach that takes advantage of “Happy Accidents”. Explore a visually exciting location each week, from Mt. Agamenticus to the sea, from gardens to beaches to downtown Portsmouth. Bill demos in watercolor, pen and ink, and pencil. Students are welcome to work in the medium of their choice.
