Figure on the Armature

Figure on the Armature (SA 21) with Cate Irvine focusses on traditional modeling skills, working intensively on one pose with the live model. Gesture, proportion, basic surface anatomy, and an analysis of the planes of the head and its features are all part of this figure intensive course. Cate was trained at the New York Academy of Art and has extensive anatomical, modeling and observational skills that she would love to share with you.

Graphite Powder Drawing

Gretchen Woodman offers Graphite Powder Drawing (SA 13), a 4 week class teaching with a medium that has been used largely for medical and scientific illustration. Learn to create soft, beautiful images with photographic accuracy, beginning with simple forms and then experimenting with a variety of surfaces and images.

Academic Art Crash Course

Academic Art Crash Course (SA 7) with Alastair Dacey is another way to introduce traditional thinking and skills in a methodically academic approach to drawing with an impressionist's eye. Alastair conveys these methods with passion as he teaches the rigors of academic drawing and painting and the art of seeing. Still life painting and drawing with a focus on design, value unity, color seeing and mixing and a 'visual order' approach are all part of this introduction to the pleasures of drawing and painting.

Intro to Jewelry

Alice Carroll offers Intro to Jewelry (SA 20) for beginners and more advanced students. Hot and cold connections, piercing, surface decoration, light forging, forming and basic stone settings are all demonstrated. Alice offers a great class to get your feet wet and learn metal basics.

Watercolor
Russel Whitten, who just had a successful show at The George Marshall Store in York with two other past students of Dewitt Hardy's, offers a 10 week Watercolor
(SA 6)
class. The emphasis will be on drawing and controlling water media while re-creating the appearance of nature. Perspective, composition, value and color are the foundations of this class.

Painting the Still Life in Oil

Have you ever wished your skill level was enough to accomplish your creative ideas? Sanctuary Arts has many options to help you increase your technical skills. Sydney Bella Sparrow offers Painting the Still Life in Oil (SA 8). Sydney's own work is incredible and she is an instructor who can convey the skills necessary to become a fine realist painter. She is a master of color mixing and makes sure each student has a thorough grasp of color mixing principles. Beginners through more advanced painters will get a lot out of a class with Sydney.

Drawing the Figure

Sydney Sparrow also offers Drawing the Figure (SA 9). Sydney spent a semester studying at Lyme Academy with a Florence Academy instructor, enhancing her figure drawing skills. She has a great blocking out method that ensures all of the work you do will be correctly proportioned as you work towards a finished 3 dimensional figure with full values and form. It's a class I need to take since I have trouble seeing the correct proportions and hate wasting my time rendering when I realize all of my mistakes that could have been corrected at the beginning.

Traditional Drawing Skills

Carol Ann Morley is another instructor who ably teaches traditional drawing skills.  She offers The Pleasure of Sketching (SA 2) class, Drawing Animals (SA 3), Botanical Drawing (SA 11), and a one day Colored Pencil Techniques (SA 14). Carol began as a medical illustrator and then switched to Botanical Illustration. Trained in England, Carol's drawing abilities are superb, coupled with an ability to clearly communicate her extensive knowledge. Carol brings in lots of examples, demonstrates and gives each student one on one quality time.

We have a wonderful array of courses to suit the discerning pallette for a Fall of lively, artful learning. We welcome you to join us!www.sanctuaryarts.org
