Judge Eric L. Levinson, JD

Topic: " Contrasting rule of law and justice experiences in North Carolina with those in international regions -- including Iraq; Afghanistan; and the rural expanses of Western Africa."

Judge Levinson will share personal observations of the process involving the execution of "Chemical Ali" and the punishment for terrorists to a young woman incarcerated in The Gambia for seven years for accusing her village neighbor of "practicing witchcraft." How do our western expectations of due process and justice differ from other rule of law cultures, and how might they parallel one another?

Judge Eric L. Levinson is an American jurist and lawyer.  He is an Adjunct Instructor, for the Judicial College, Institute of Government, UNC-Chapel Hill.  He was Resident Superior Court Judge for Mecklenburg County July 2009 – December 2018He was Presiding Judge in Senior General Jurisdiction venue, adjudicating serious felony and significant, complex civil matters in all substantive areas of the lawHe was appointed to the Superior Court upon return from Iraq and Afghanistan with broad business and community support.


From August 2008 - December 2008 he was NGO Rule of Law Consultant to a USAID affiliate inKabul, Afghanistan where he counseled senior members of the Supreme Court of Afghanistan and the Haqooq regarding the development of commercial court venues.  In collaboration with representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Supreme Court of Afghanistan, he drafted legislation to enhance civil recoveries by aggrieved individuals and corporate entities.

Judge Levinson was Justice Attache to Iraq for the United States Department of Justice in Baghdad, Iraq, from July 2007 to March 2008.   He was appointed to this position by then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, of the Bush Administration.  He functioned with Security Clearance to manage the U.S. government's diplomatic relationship with the leadership of the Iraqi Higher Judicial Council (HJC), including the Chief Justice, Chief Public Advocate/Prosecutor and Chief Investigative Judge for terrorism and corruption offenses.  He fulfilled a role as interlocutor between the U.S. Department of Justice and Iraqi civilian justice professionals for persons and cases of interest to the USG

 Judge Levinson received a JD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BBA in Finance, cum laude, from the University of Georgia, Athens, GA.
