SHIDONI
A Repurposed Impact |
|
|
“Rebrand is not just about buzzing words; it's about repurposing your lives, finding your true voice and building an authentic brand that impact lives. It's a call to reexamine our lives, our goals and dreams; to think about why we do what we do, to align lives back to source and connect with the hearts of people. It's a movement, to help, to add value, to create meaning, to impact lives."
― Bernard Kelvin Clive

Over the last 46 years, Shidoni has set out on impacting the lives of artists, art collectors, and art lovers around the world. Opening its doors so everyone can experience the “magic of art”, it has been the connecting force in thousands of people’s lives. Though many changes have come to the image of what Shidoni was, Shidoni gallery hopes that what Shidoni has now become will continue to enrich people’s lives, and recreate the meaning of art within their hearts. Rebuilding a brand that has as much history and depth as Shidoni has, was no easy feat, but thanks to the dedication and commitment of Shidoni’ artists and patrons we are entering into a new era. |

Shidoni Arts Gallery: Gatis Cirulis |
|
|
Come enjoy the artists you have come to know and love, and come experience the new works of art we have added to our galleries by three of our recently acquired artistic talents such as Sandra Kaplan, whose work has developed over her 40 years as a professional photographer. Her work reflects light, shade and color that dazzles, excites, provokes and inspires her students and collectors alike. Her knowledge and love affair with the camera allow her to go where others fear to tread. Her gifts include not only an eye for beauty, but also the urge to experiment, creating exquisite images that delight the senses and evoke deep passion within the viewer; Fred Briscoe whose method is most akin to “play or free-spirited exploring”; a form where a personal language is developed and evolves into a more direct process when he enters into a dialogue with the stone, with no preconceived direction, only to speak this language through the rock directly; and Gatis Cirulis who explores non-verbal communication, symbols and ideas that unite cultures and cross language barriers. He states there is an expectation of misunderstanding whenever there is a cultural or language divide, however, all people have common knowledge of basic elements, spatial directions, cycles of seasons and the human body - Intuitive universal knowledge exists across various cultures. His own intercultural experience feeds his interest in how this intuitive knowledge can connect cultures without the use of language. |

Sandra Kaplan
Her work has developed over her 40 years as a professional photographer. Her work reflects light, shade and color that dazzles, excites, provokes and inspires her students and collectors alike. Her knowledge and love affair with the camera allow her to go where others fear to tread. Her gifts include not only an eye for beauty, but also the urge to experiment, creating exquisite images that delight the senses and evoke deep passion within the viewer.
Modestly, she will tell you that it has been a long resplendent journey beginning in Hollywood, California in the late 60’s, and indeed she was the first woman allowed into the film industry as a photographer on set. Continuing her work in Paris, France in the 70’s covering the major fashion houses and magazines of Europe, gaining a reputation as a “Fashion Photographer”.
Hollywood called again, which led her back to Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros. and Paramount Studios, photographing some of the biggest stars, producers and directors of the era. Many of her photographs remain the timeless images of Hollywood’s most famous. She says of her portrait photography, “I never set out to simply take a photo, creating an image is my mission.”
In 1996 Kaplan took her journey and expertise to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado seeking freedom to experiment. Her cameras became her paintbrushes and produced results beyond even her own expectations. Her shows in Colorado and New York have made her work sought after by collectors. The natural evolution of a gift such as hers is to share, to teach.
She has taught at The Red Brick Center for the Arts, an Associate of Aspen Art Museum, and Colorado Mountain College, at various campus as well as The Peninsula School of Art in Door County, Wisconsin. Of teaching she confesses, “It is the most excitement I’ve ever known, watching students come to life, coming to love the camera and the sheer joy of what it can do.”

Fred Briscoe
His earliest sculptures were 3D realizations of his fairly detailed drawings. This approach led to developing a personal language and evolved into a more direct process where he entered into a dialogue with the stone with no preconceived direction, only to speak this language through this rock.
This method is most akin to “play-free-spirited exploring” form, wherever it leads; like a child digging tunnels or building castles in the sand.
Beauty matters with its classical elements that become significant components of this language – line, curve, edge, proportion, negative space, texture - How they come to be in a new unique combination that is, as he states, “my fun, my job, and my joy” – and on a good day, that joy is shared.

Gatis Cirulis
Originally from a small country on the Baltic Sea, Latvia, Gatis has travelled across the United States for work and study, and has settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Having grown up on a farm, Gatis pursued agricultural education until he came to the US and enrolled in art courses at a small Michigan community college. Several years later, he has earned an MFA degree from the Indiana State University, Bloomington. He has worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, art director and has taught design and art at the university level. His work has been shown and published both in the United States and in Europe. Gatis also works on commercial and residential murals in the US and abroad. After settling in Santa Fe, Gatis devotes his time to his family, freelance creative practice, martial arts and growing a garden in the desert.
"In my work, I explore non-verbal communication, symbols and ideas that unite cultures and cross language barriers. There is an expectation of misunderstanding whenever there is a cultural or language divide. However, all people have common knowledge of basic elements, spatial directions, cycles of seasons and human body. Intuitive universal knowledge exists across various cultures. My own intercultural experience feeds my interest in how this intuitive knowledge can connect cultures without the use of language.
I grew up on a family farm in Latvia, a small country on the Baltic Sea. Working on the land and with animals, playing in the fields and forests, I saw natures fluidity, beauty and struggle. This work is about the cyclical rhythms of nature, the reliable patterns that are part of the universal knowledge. The drawings are intuitive and responsive — informed by the process of drawing itself and communicating with the work as it progresses. I work on multiple drawings at a time, going back and forward, refining, adjusting and expanding.
Having worked in both traditional and digital media, my work always starts with pencil on paper — a way to think with my hands. I approach drawing as a river—you can walk into it at the same location, but it will never be the same, it always evolves and flows."
