Soul Medicine

“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.

John Burroughs

Allow the work of our creative artists to inspire the healing of Mother Nature in the soul of your home and life, with our recent artist Donovan Yazzie and his works influenced by the traditional Navajo Beauty Way teachings passed down to him by his parents - both medicine people for over 70 years; Zanne Nelson who states that her pieces are about "Becoming" - as they are external, visual markers of an internal, personal process of moving towards wholeness through the exploration of translating mere clay into ceramic works of art, and then having an alchemistic transformation of ceramic into immortalized bronze; our newest pieces by Alan Powell who sees furniture and architecture as passages into a greater landscape where the lines and curves in his work often appear as if they were chosen by the materials themselves; Alan Dahlstrand who uses the natural beauty of his materials by creating cut-rock lamp shades, that offer a unique qualiy of lighting and a display of the natural patterns in the variety of rocks such as agate, obsidian, quartz, and petrified wood; and Brad Morton who approaches sculpture rooted in the idea of 'Truth to the Materials' - where his bronze pieces tend to be organic, natural forms, to the juxtapose of the fabricated pieces that utilize the flat planes, smooth lines, and hard edges to convey the contemporary minimalism of the man-made world.

His work is a reflection of the traditional Navajo Beauty Way teachings passed down to him by his parents, who have been medicine people for over 70 years. You will find references to the duality of life in all his pieces – particularly the balance of male and female forces, which are different but complimentary like light and dark, black and white, morning and evening. He believes they are necessary for the creation of new life on this earth plane and for balanced growth and renewal. Always supporting this dance are the spiritual forces of Mother Earth, which are alive and always changing. He is constantly experimenting with new methods and techniques for using metal; a strong, enduring, but also living substance, to bring the teachings to light. His work is created in low-carbon steel, with paint and clear lacquer applied where necessary to bring the piece to life and introduce the subtleties of the teachings. The lacquer also seals the piece to minimize oxidation. Each piece is unique and has been blessed to bring inspiration and balancing energy into your home.

She states that philosophically, her pieces are about ‘Becoming’ - as they are external, visual markers of an internal, personal process of moving toward wholeness. Aesthetically, she describes the pieces as being “geomorphic” or basically derived from simple two-dimensional geometric designs that are then given a three-dimensional “body”. Her hope is that these elemental forms connect with the viewer on a universal, archetypal level. The pieces are constructed in clay using the coil method over a slab-built skeleton. Surface treatments are one, or a combination of, low fire underglaze, washes, and glazes. She has more recently been exploring the possibilities of translating her sculptures into bronze, as she looks at it as “Some sort of alchemy that seems to be at work, transforming mud to metal”. Working in bronze allows her to create limited editions, to caste forms on any scale, and to remove the limitation of not being able to place the pieces in outdoor settings.

He sees furniture and architecture as passages into a greater landscape; the lines and curves in his work often appear as if they were chosen by the materials themselves. As a master builder with LEED accreditation, he creates interior furnishings which are robust, yet artfully and sustainably crafted. Each piece offers exceptional showcase appeal and harmonizing ability within any décor. Hints of classical Chinese and midcentury Scandinavian styling are joined together with remarkable harmony, as he takes traditional construction methodologies and elevates them with his reverence for the natural world. Praised for his eco-conscious approach and innovative expression, he serves his clients' needs with ample consideration. No detail is too small or insignificant, as the custom design process is about co-creating a space for answers to arise organically for the results to be mutually determined, even if often delightfully unexpected.

His
cut-rock lamp shades are created from rock that is translucent and offers a unique quality of lighting and a display of the natural patterns in the rock. Most rock is not translucent, therefore finding those that have a translucent quality is the first challenge in the making of a rock lamp. Many rocks are collected in order to find the translucent quality needed for lamps. The general types of rock that have been used in lamps include a variety of agates, opal, obsidian, quartz & mariposite, onyx, petrified wood, and cave marble (travertine). Many of these rock types do not have the translucent quality or interesting colors and patterns, so the choice of the rock to use requires the cutting of sample slices. Much of the rock used in these lamps has been collected in the field by him and his wife or purchased from rock shops if it is unavailable on public lands and the only source is a mining claim where it is mined and sold commercially. Each shade is designed to display the natural rock patterns and to carry the continuity of the patterns or fabric throughout each panel and the entire shade. Lamp bases are constructed from drill steel and bits that were previously used in the Altaville Gold Mine in Calaveras County, California or sculpted wood.

He graduated with a MFA from the University of Georgia at Athens, he currently lives in Birmingham, AL teaching special studies in ceramic sculpture at the University of Alabama, and as the Artist in Residence at the Alabama State Council of the Arts and Humanities. He was part of the “Coat of Many Colors – A tapestry of Alabama artists” a documentary by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Alabama Public Television, and has shown his work in Alabama such as the “The Fiery Furnace - Cast Metal Sculpture - Invitational Exhibition of Birmingham Art Association” in Birmingham; in New Mexico at the “Lumina of New Mexico - Group show of outdoor sculpture” in Taos; and in Georgia such as “The Columbus Museum of Art” in Columbus. He is part of many private and corporate collections including, “Sisters of Sacred Heart” at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida; “Ivy Division Memorial Sculpture” at the National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia; “John W. Kirklan, M.D.”, “Encounters”, and “The Crossing” at The University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama; “The Champion”, and “Arthroscopy” at The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in Birmingham, Alabama; and "Helix/R" at One Independence Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. His approach to sculpture has always been rooted in the idea of 'truth to the materials’, where his bronze pieces tend to be organic, natural forms, and the fabricated pieces utilize the flat planes, smooth lines, and hard edges to convey the contemporary minimalism of the man-made world. He occasionally combines these two methods in an effort to symbolize a balance between the natural and man-made worlds.
