In March 1972, President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for adults 60 years and older. Meals on Wheels came to be shortly after. Today, to commenorate this historic event, Meals on Wheels America leads a month-long national campaign, March for Meals. Meals on Wheels programs from across the country join forces to garner the support needed to ensure these critical programs can continue to address food insecurity and malnutrition, combat social isolation, enable independence, and improve health for years to come.
Part of the March for Meals is Community Champions Week during which community leaders volunteer to distribute meals and raise awareness of the importance of programs such as Meals on Wheels in increasing food security and social connectedness among older adults and adults with disabilities. On March 21st, Southern Maine Agency on Aging will welcome Community Champions at all eight of our Meals on Wheels sites!
Meals on Wheels is so much more than just a meal delivery. When our volunteers deliver the meals, they aslo check that the clients are doing well and are safe in their homes. It is a friendly visit along with a nutritious meal.
Our commitment to increase social connections and food security among older adults and adults with disabilities is embedded in all SMAA's Nutrition programs. We are growing the number of our Community Cafes through partnerships with diverse host organizations. Currently, we have over 15 Community Cafes across Cumberland and York Counties and if your organization is interested in hosting one, connect with us! Same goes for our As You Like It, and Simply Delivered for ME programs.
We believe that it is our responsibility - as an organization, as individuals, and as part of the communities we serve - to make sure that no older adult or adult with disability goes hungry and feels lonely and isolated. Not only in March but every day of the year!
