Doing Our Best with the Times We Are Given
Here at the Southern Maine Agency on Aging, fall is always an important season for programming, and just like you, we have been so looking forward to returning to more in-person services and events! Yet, heading into colder months, with case counts on the rise again, the impact of COVID-19 continues to be at the top of our minds. Our journey in learning to live with COVID and finding the “new normal” is not yet over. Even with vaccinations widely available and the now familiar practices of masking and social distancing, there is still some level of risk for each of us in community activities. We all have a role to play in managing our
own health, making decisions that feel safe and comfortable for us, while also honoring the needs of those at higher risk.  Each SMAA staff and volunteer understands how critical programs like Community Cafes, Agewell, Meal on Wheels, and Medicare counseling are to our clients.  It is this knowledge that has driven us to reinforce our policies around masking and symptom screening, to continue our partnership with Northern Light Home Care and Hospice to provide in-home COVID vaccinations, and to offer a blend of in-person and virtual options that meet people where they are.

There is so much happening at SMAA this fall – in September we hosted our 4th Annual Charting the Future event, which highlighted the critical issue of social isolation. We continuously adapt our programs and services to create caring, welcoming, and meaningful connections with our clients, while ensuring everyone feels safe. Our Savvy Caregiver program, which also began in September is now offered both in person and via Zoom. We have in-person A Matter of Balance classes returning for the first time in over 18 months, and virtual tai chi workshops! Medicare Open Enrollment Period begins October 15th and SMAA’s highly qualified team of Certified SHIP Counselors are already scheduling 1:1 appointments to help clients review and update their Medicare insurance options for Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans. Clients who work with our Medicare counselors save on average $800/year.  This year, appointments will again be offered remotely via phone and Zoom - an ongoing way in which we’re adapting to the challenges of COVID to keep our communities safe while still delivering this valuable service.

As the Director of Community Education, leading both the Medicare and Agewell programs, both of which have historically gathered many people together in one place, it’s been disheartening to see the effects of the pandemic not only on our programs, but also on the opportunities to connect with others.  My saving grace over these long months has been the daily inspiration I draw from the amazing and dedicated volunteers I have the honor of working alongside, who have shown resilience and innovation to keep our programs running. And I keep revisiting the wise words of J.R.R. Tolkien “I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
Stay safe and healthy!

In case you missed it:
On September 17th, 2021, SMAA held the 4th annual Charting the Future event. Our focus was on social isolation and healthy aging, with speakers Prof. Tom Meuser from the Center for Excellence in Aging & Health at the University of New England, Leana Amaez from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, and Donato Tramuto, former CEO of Tivity Health®, Inc., provider of SilverSneakers - the nation’s largest community fitness program for older adults, Founder and Chairman of Health eVillages and the Tramuto Foundation, author and health care activist.

The presentations inspired us to continue providing and growing our programs and services that help older adults feel less isolated and more engaged.

We hope that the three panelists will inspire you as well to take action and connect with a neighbor and make a difference in the lives of older adults in your community.
