The Sports Association is dedicated to improving the lives of persons with physical disabilities through adaptive sports and recreation.

Dear Friends of the Sports Association, 

The winter sports season is in full swing! 

Join us for a ski trip or an indoor activity.  Archery, boccia, and golf clinics fill our upcoming schedule.  Experienced archers can even join the Sports Association Archery Club!  Join us for our upcoming indoor kayak classes and be eligible to participate in our kayak outings in the summer of 2019!  We are also annoucing the date of our annual adaptive rock climbing clinic which will take place in April at Prime Climb Gym in Wallingford.  And the SMASHBOWL is back!  Come cheer on the teams and have some fun!

Gaylord Gauntlet - Saturday, June 22, 2019
Put your determination and athleticism to the test by running the Gaylord Gauntlet! Proceeds from this annual 5k Obstacle Course Race support the Gaylord Sports Association.  If running is not for you, how about volunteering?  It takes over 100 volunteers to make this event possible!  Come be a part of this fun event and support the Sports Association!  Register today as race waves fill up quickly!
Adaptive Climbing Clinic

Have you ever thought about trying rock climbing? Here is your chance to try this fun and challenging sport with expert instruction! Join the Sports Association for our annual Adaptive Rock Climbing Clinic! We are teaming up with Ascent Climbing and Prime Climb to offer this clinic for beginners or more experienced climbers ages 16 and up with a permanent physical disability or visual impairment. Climbers will receive an introduction to adaptive climbing followed by individualized climbing instruction. Climbers may use traditional climbing techniques or sit-climbing techniques depending on ability level.

Archery Clinics

Come and try this sport of skill and accuracy by registering for an Adaptive Archery Clinic! These clinics are designed for individuals with a physical disability or visual impairment to learn about and participate in the sport of archery. Participants will receive instruction from a level IV Certified USA Archery Coach as well as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists to give the best possible instruction and support independence. Both beginners and advanced archers are welcome and all equipment is provided.

Boccia Open Play Nights

Come and join us at a Boccia Open Play Night!  Experience the precision and strategy of this throwing sport. Open play nights are for all individuals regardless of ability. This event will feature warmups, training and strategy drills, and team play.  Learn techniques and play with a spirited group of experienced boccia players.  Come join our spirited players for a fun evening!

Indoor Kayak Classes

Join us for our indoor kayak classes!  Indoor Adaptive Kayak Classes are pre-requisites to participate in our outdoor kayak program.  Certified kayak instructors will teach the basics of paddle strokes, kayak equipment, safety, and how to adapt or modify for individual needs. This is a two-part class over two consecutive weeks.

Golf Clinics
The Sports Association Adaptive Golf Clinics at Gaylord Hospital are designed to provide adult golfers with physical disabilities and visual impairments the opportunity to work with a trained professional to adapt the sport of golf and overcome barriers. Participants will receive instruction from golf professionals as well as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists to give the best possible instruction and support independence. Beginners and returning participants are welcome and all equipment is provided.

Seated Yoga Classes
Come take part in Gaylord Sports Association’s seated yoga class! Yoga leads to many benefits including improved flexibility, circulation, posture, and strength. Practicing adaptive yoga can be modified for any participant, including those recovering from strokes, surgery, MS and arthritis and is open to individuals with physical disabilities or visual impairments.

Adaptive Archery Club
The Gaylord Sports Association Adaptive Archery Club is a dedicated group of archers who meet throughout the year for both indoor and outdoor practice at Gaylord Hospital. Club practices are held an hour before the regular archery clinics.  The club is for Sports Association members who have attended clinics or classes and who want more time to shoot with other experienced archers. This group works on advanced archery technique, participates in games, individual and team scoring, and most of all has a bunch of fun! For information on eligibility, what is required, and how to apply for membership, please contact the Sports Association at sports@gaylord.org or 203-284-2772.   See you on the range!
About Our Program and Events

The Sports Association is a program of Gaylord Hospital and is based out of Wallingford, CT. We are a Paralympic Sport Club and chapter member of Disabled Sports USA. We serve adults with physical disabilities and visual impairments and welcome new members to join us. All programs require registration and some programs have registration deadlines. We recommend early registration since some programs fill quickly. Call us at 203-284-2772 with any questions or to register. Most events are free unless otherwise noted.
