Dear Friends of the Sports Association,
It's already starting to feel like spring and we have been busy planning our spring and summer programs! We have three great special events coming your way! Our annual Adaptive Climbing Clinic is returning to Central Rock Gym on April 1, 2023 and registration is now open! Next week, we have an Exercise for Life Discovery Night where you can learn about this exercise program orgainzed by Gaylord Physical Therapy in Cheshire. We also have an indoor adaptive pickleblall clinic being held at New Horizons Village on March 1st. Our winter indoor clinics in Archery, Boccia, Golf and Kayak continue to run regularly. You can also join us from the comfort of home for a seated yoga class. The Gaylord Wolfpack Sled Hockey Team and the Gaylord Jammers have been busy travelling and competing - check out the updates in the newsletter!  There are so many opportunities to get involved! We hope to see you all soon!

Wolfpack Community Foundation Grant 

The Gaylord Sports Association received a $10,000 grant from the Hartford Wolf Pack Foundation in support of the Gaylord Wolfpack Sled Hockey Team! The generous grant was presented at a Hartford Wolf Pack game to Katie Joly, Program Manager of the Gaylord Sports Association, Trevor Doyon, Gaylord Wolfpack Team Coach and Ryan Sparks, Gaylord Wolfpack player. We are extremely grateful for the Hartford Wolf Pack Foundation's continued support of the team! Their generosity will help purchase new equipment as well as assist with travel expenses for our team members as they travel to out-of-state games and tournaments throughout the season.

Exercise For Life Discovery Night

Join us at Gaylord Physical Therapy in Cheshire to learn about the Exercise For Life (EX4L) Program! The Exercise for Life Program is a FREE community group exercise class for people of all ages with physical disabilities. The Discovery Night will include a presentation on the program, demonstration of equipment used, opportunity to meet the coaches and information on how to apply for the program. This event is open to anyone who is interested in learning about the Exercise for Life Program.

Indoor Adaptive Pickleball Clinic
The Sports Association will be partnering with New Horizons Village and the Town of Farmington for an indoor adaptive Pickleball Clinic! The clinic is open for both New Horizons Village residents and Sports Association members! This is a great opportunity to try out the sport or get in some indoor play. Pickleball is a paddle sport that can be played by individuals with all types of impairments. Players can play standing or from a wheelchair. There will be sports wheelchairs available at the clinic to try. Come join us for a fun morning of Pickleball!

Adaptive Climbing Clinic
Our Adaptive Rock Climbing Clinic is returning to Central Rock Gym in Glastonbury! This is a great opportunity to try indoor rock climbing, alongside professional and experienced climbers. Individualized instruction will be provided to introduce adaptive equipment, teach specialized climbing techniques and maximize independence. Standard and adaptive equipment will be provided and no experience is necessary. This event is FREE however space is limited and advanced registration is required. Gaylord Gauntlet Adaptive Athlete Sponsorships Available for Out-of-State Residents!  

The Gaylord Gauntlet 5k Trail and Obstacle Run celebrates its tenth year with 1,000 runners expected to participate in the Saturday, June 24th race. Held entirely on the 400-acre campus of Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, race proceeds will benefit the Gaylord Sports Association! The course offers wooded trail and open field running with 24 natural and man-made obstacles, lots of mud, walls, climbing net, logs, a waterslide and more. The course is a fun challenge for everyone, with all racers utilizing the same obstacles. Two adaptive athletes sponsorships are available for out-of-state residents. Eligible applicants must be over 16, have a permanent physical disability, and live outside of Connecticut. Sponsorships will cover entry fees, lodging, and race-day food for the athlete and up to four supporting team members. Upcoming Programs
Kayak Class 

This Adaptive Kayak Class provides the opportunity to learn or re-learn kayaking in the comfort of our indoor therapy pool. Certified kayak instructors teach the basics of paddle strokes, kayak equipment, safety and how to adapt or modify for individual needs. Once a participant completes the class, they will be eligible to participate in open water paddles during the summer.

Ski and Snowboard Program

The ski season is uderway! We have had 3 successful trips and are looking forward to more excitement on the slopes. The Sports Association is partnering with SUMMIT Adaptive Sports at Ski Sundown in New Hartford, CT to offer ski and snowboard lessons this season. We have two remaining trips on Saturday, February 25, 2023, 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM and Monday, March 6, 2023, 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM. Cost is $50 per lesson. Archery Clinics
Our Indoor Adaptive Archery Clinics are a great opportunity to try archery or practice your technique. Come learn from USA Archery certified coaches and experienced archers.  All skill levels are welcome and equipment is provided.

Golf Clinics
Golf clinics provide the opportunity to work with a trained PGA professional, Certified Recreation Therapists and volunteers to adapt the sport of golf, overcome barriers, and support independence. Clinics will include driving and putting.  Beginners and returning participants are welcome and all equipment is provided.

Boccia Open Play
Boccia is a throwing sport of precision which has been adapted for athletes of all abilities using a few modifications. The object is to place balls closest to the target ball by throwing or rolling the ball using a ramp. Games are played one on one, in pairs, and teams of three. All are welcome to learn this game of skill and strategy!

Mindful Resilience Yoga  
Join the Gaylord Sports Association and instructor Rebecca Smith for Mindful Resilience Yoga classes. This form of yoga incorporates gentle yoga postures, movement sequences, breath work and guided meditation to help you focus clearly, move mindfully and practice gratitude. This class is designed for all ability levels and will be taught primarily in the seated position in a chair with modifications to fit each individual’s abilities. This is a 6-class series held on Thursdays at 6 pm every other week from February 2 to April 13, 2023. Participate in person at Gaylord or virtually via Zoom.

Gaylord Jammers Wheelchair Rugby
The Gaylord Jammers joined forces with the NY Warriors for a recent tournament at Stony Brook University on Long Island. Jammers players helped the combined team win 2 games against the NEP Wildcats out of New Hampshire. Will Kornegay of the Jammers led the combined team in scoring with Armand Brunelle also contributing to scoring. Jammers Ben Darosa and Joe Stone on offense and defense helped the team to success. Matt Castelluccio and Brian Amundsen of NY anchored the starting lineup and were keys to the victories as well. The weekend also included some inter squad games with NY, CT and DC area players. Jammers Coach Dom Colavito had an opportunity to coach his first Wheelchair Rugby tournament and was happy with how the team played. He has coached the Gaylord Jammers since the fall of 2021 and was thrilled that the players finally had a chance to compete since COVID. 


Gaylord Wolfpack Sled Hockey Team
The Gaylord Wolfpack Sled Hockey Team has been busy competing in league games in VT, MA, ME and NH as part of the Northeast Sled Hockey League. Next is the league finals in New Jersey where they will compete for the league title! Good Luck Wolfpack!!  To check out the upcoming schedule visit neshl.org. Program Registration 
Pre-registration is required for all programs. Please contact us with questions or to register by emailing sports@gaylord.org or by calling 203-284-2772. To maintain as safe an environment as possible, COVID-19 protocols will be used for all attendees, staff and volunteers. Surgical style face masks are required if in the hospital. Clinics will have a maximum number of participants per session. Some programs have essential eligibility requirements for safety.  Cost is FREE unless otherwise noted.
