The Sports Association is dedicated to improving the lives of persons with physical disabilities through adaptive sports and recreation.

Dear Friends of the Sports Association, 


Summer continues and we are excited to be outside for our programs!  We have three exciting clinic opportunities coming your way:  Pickleball, Wheelchair Tennis and Veterans Archery!  Join us on Wednesday, July 28 to try Pickleball, a fun and easy paddle sport for all abilities. We are hosting our second Wheelchair Tennis Clinic on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Learn from a professional tennis coach and meet the new coach of the Sports Association's own tennis team. Veterans can learn and practice the sport of archery at our two veterans only archery clinics scheduled for Aug. 25 and Sept. 8.  We also have golf, archery, kayaking, and cycling programs!

Gaylord Gauntlet - Saturday, June 26, 2021
The Gaylord Gauntlet was held Saturday, June 26th!  We had 500 runners registered, 120+ volunteers and an amazing day!  Greg Whitehouse, the Sports Association Featured Athlete, ran the course in a little over an hour.  Great Job Greg and the Sports Association team! We also had 11 other adaptive athletes who were supported by their teams. Adaptive Pickleball Clinic

Join the Sports Association for an introductory clinic to this easy and fun paddle sport! Pickleball is adaptable to all ability levels, including standing or wheelchair players.  The clinic will provide equipment, instruction, skills practice and game play.  Wheelchair players may use their own chair or reserve a tennis chair to use for the clinic.  Pre-registration is required. To register, call the Gaylord Sports Association at 203-284-2772 or email sports@gaylord.org.
Wheelchair Tennis Clinic
Are you intersted in trying Wheelchair Tennis?  Here is your chance!  Join us at our clinic on Saturday, August 21.  All skill and ability levels are welcome. The clinic will include instruction,  equipment, and game play.  This event is open to anyone who is interested in learning about and playing tennis. Sport wheelchairs can be reserved at registration.

Learn the basics of archery and practice proper form with instruction from USA Archery certified coaches. A bow will be reserved for each participant upon registration.  This is an event for Veterans with a permanent physical disability, visual impairment or PTSD.  Clinics are located outdoors on the South Lawn at Gaylord Specialty Healthcare.

Upcoming Programs
Kayak Outings
Experience the freedom of the open water during a Sports Association’s Adaptive Kayak Outing. Kayak Outings are for individuals who have participated and passed the Sports Association’s Kayak Classes and would like to take their skills to the next level, or just enjoy an outdoor kayak experience. Outings include all the necessary equipment and guidance from both American Canoe Association certified instructors and Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Kayaking is not only a great fitness activity, it’s an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, socialize, watch for wildlife, relax and just have fun! There is a $10 fee for kayak outings payable prior to the outing. Essential eligibility also applies so please call the Sports Association at 203-284-2772 for more information!

Golf Clinics
Golf clinics provide the opportunity to work with a trained PGA professional, Certified Recreation Therapists and volunteers to adapt the sport of golf, overcome barriers, and support independence. Clinics will include practice at our outdoor driving range and putting green.  Beginners and returning participants are welcome and all equipment is provided. Clinics are held on the South Lawn at Gaylord Specialty Healthcare in Wallingford.  If a clinic is full, please call to be added to the waiting list as we often have cancellations!

Cycle Rides
Join us for a ride this summer!  Cycle rides are designed to be enjoyable for riders of all abilities, so each ride may break into several groups based on ability, speed & distance desired. Bring your own bike, or borrow a bike from us!  New riders can schedule an individualized cycle fit to determine which cycle would work best for them.  Rides take place on the Cheshire Linear Trail, a closed trail, free from traffic from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM (except the Sept.30th ride which is 4:00 PM-6:00 PM).  Registration is required for all rides.

Wheelchair Tennis Team
We are recruiting wheelchair tennis players!  Wheelchair Tennis practices are now being held weekly at Gaylord Tennis Courts.  All skill levels are welcome.  Contact us for more information!  
Program Registration 
  • Pre-registration is required for all programs.  Please contact us to register by emailing sports@gaylord.org or by calling 203-284-2772.
  • To maintain as safe an enviroment as possible, COVID-19 protocols will be used for all attendees, staff and volunteers. All participants will be screened for COVID-19.  Face coverings continue to be required at most programs.  
  • Cost is FREE unless otherwise noted.
  • Clinics will have a maximum number of participants per session.
  • Some programs have essential eligibility requirements for safety.
