Welcome to summer!
 
We have had a busy start to the summer with the Gaylord Gauntlet on June 25th and the Gaylord Golf Classic on June 20th!  Plus, our Veterans Fishing Tournament and Adaptive Climbing Clinics were a huge success. 
 
We have a packed summer coming up with lots of opportunities to get out and get active with us!  Join us for archery, golf, cycle rides and more! Keep an eye on your email for waterskiing and pickleball dates to be released soon! 
 
We are excited to announce a new special event - the Gaylord Bullseye Classic Archery Tournament!  Come out to Gaylord for an afternoon of friendly archery competition in August! 
 
Mark your calendar for Tuesday, August 30th for the return of The Ken Murphy Memorial Open Adaptive Golf Tournament at the Farms Country Club in Wallingford!  Details and registration information will be released soon!

Gaylord Gauntlet

Thank you to everyone who supported the Gaylord Gauntlet!
 
Hundreds of able-bodied and adaptive athletes gathered to conquer 24 obstacles at the 9th Annual Gaylord Gauntlet 5k on June 25. Thank you to Platinum sponsors Amphenol Corporation and ImageFIRST and to the 800+ runners who participated in support of the Gaylord Sports Association. We had 18 adaptive athletes take on the challenge of the Gaylord Gauntlet this year including athletes from Achilles CT, Hanger Clinic and Gaylord Sports Association! Watch NBC Connecticut’s coverage of the Gauntlet and see 2022 Featured Adaptive Athletes, Jillian Harpin and Jay Ross, compete against each other!

Veterans Fishing Tournament
The Veterans Fishing Tournament held on May 17th was a sucess with 25 veterans in attendance!  Volunteer boat captains were each paired with a veteran and they enjoyed a day on the water fishing on Candlewood Lake followed by a weigh-in and awards luncheon.  Congratulations to veteran Mike Kelsey and boat captain, Mike Iovino, with a first place finish and a 5-fish total weight of 21.24 lbs! Adaptive Climbing Clinic
We had an absolutely incredible day at Central Rock Gym in Glastonbury for our Adaptive Rock Climbing Clinic! It was awesome to see 23 climbers challenging themselves and trying something new! Thank you to Ascent Climbing for top notch instruction, an amazing group of over 30 volunteers including groups from Hanger Clinic and University of Hartford and to Move United for helping to make this possible! This was one of the best clinics yet!  Check out the photos HERE!

Gaylord Golf Classic 
More than 150 golfers joined us for Gaylord's 33rd Annual Golf Classic on June 20 at Great River Golf Club in Milford, CT. Proceeds from the event benefit the Gaylord Sports Association enabling us to offer 15 different adaptive sports programs at little to no cost to participants. Players from the Sled Hockey Team volunteered to run a 50/50 raffle on the course. A big thank you to Steve Emt who was our guest speaker. Steve shared his story of recovery at Gaylord after his injury and how he became a 2-time Paralympian in Wheelchair Curling. Special Events
Gaylord Bullseye Classic - New!
We are excited to announce that we will be hosting an archery competition this summer!
This fun competion will be based on USA Archery Para Competition rules. There will be a 30 arrow individual scoring round at 18m followed by a team round if time allows. To be eligible to compete, athletes must have a physical disability or visual impairment, be able to shoot independently (with or without modification), and have attended a Sports Association Archery Clinic in the past or be able to show that they can shoot independently. Come join us for an afternnon of friendly competition!

Golf Clinics
Golf clinics provide the opportunity to work with a trained PGA professional, Certified Recreation Therapists and volunteers to adapt the sport of golf, overcome barriers, and support independence. Clinics will include practice at our outdoor driving range and putting green.  Beginners and returning participants are welcome and all equipment is provided.

Cycle Rides
Join us for a ride this summer!  Our cycle rides are on a closed trail, free from traffic. Cycle rides are designed to be enjoyable for riders of all abilities, so each ride may break into several groups based on ability, speed & distance desired. Riders who need to borrow an adaptive cycle must contact the Sports Association to schedule a cycle fit to determine which cycle would work best for them.
 
All rides are held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM (except the Sept. 29th ride which is 4:00PM-6:00PM)  All cyclists and volunteers must register for each ride by calling the Sports Association at 203-284-2772.

The Gaylord Sports Association Adaptive Golf Club is back for another season of golf!  The club meets on a weekly basis from June through August and is for golfers with a physical disability or visual impairment.  To be eligible, participants must be able to golf independently or with modifications. This season, the club will visit Sleeping Giant Golf Course, Orange Hills Golf Course, Laurel View Country Club, and The Farms Country Club.  Each outing consists of a 9 hole round of golf.  This group works with 4 dedicated coaches to improve their game and have a bunch of fun! Wheelchair Tennis
We are excited to introduce Mark Sanderson as the new Tennis Coach of the Gaylord Hornets Tennis program!  Mark comes to the Sports Association will many years of tennis experience.
 
Are you interested in trying Wheelchair Tennis?  We are currently looking for individuals interested in playing!  Wheelchair Tennis practices are beginning on July 6th and will be held weekly on Wednesday evenings at the Gaylord Tennis Courts.  All skill levels are welcome.  Contact us for more information!

Program Registration 
Pre-registration is required for all programs. Please contact us with questions or to register by emailing sports@gaylord.org or by calling 203-284-2772.  To maintain as safe an enviroment as possible, COVID-19 protocols will be used for all attendees, staff and volunteers. All participants will be screened for COVID-19 upon entering Gaylord Hospital. Surgical style face masks are required. Clinics will have a maximum number of participants per session. Some programs have essential eligibility requirements for safety.  Cost is FREE unless otherwise noted.
