Adaptive Cycle Clinic
We hosted our annual Adaptive Cycle Clinic on Saturday, May 20th at Edgewood Park in New Haven. Over 20 people were able to get out and choose from dozens of adaptive cycles to ride. This included individuals who were riding for the first time ever, or first time since their injury. Thank you to all the adaptive cycle experts from Northeast Passage, Bike-On,com, Ti Trikes and Connecticut Adaptive Cycling who helped everyone find the perfect fit. Plus, we had an amazing volunteer crew from Gaylord Specialty Healthcare and New Haven Bike Month. Thank you to New Haven Parks, Recreation & Trees for the use of the park and their support. A huge thanks to Disabled Sports USA and the Craig H. Neilson Foundation for their support of this event! If you would like to see pictures from the event click here!
Ken Murphy Memorial Open Golf Tournament

The Gaylord Sports Association hosted their annual golf tournament, the Ken Murphy Memorial Open (previously known as the Gaylord Hospital Open), on Monday, June 12, 2017 at the Farms Country Club. This event, which was started by Ken Murphy, the founder of the Gaylord Sports Association, brought together 18 golfers with a physical disability or visual impairment for a 9-hole competitive tournament. Golfers included members of the Sports Association Adaptive Golf Club, Veterans from the West Haven VA and several first time tournament participants!

The tournament was followed by an awards luncheon which included golfers, volunteers, Gaylord staff, and members of the Murphy Family. Awards were given to the top 3 pairs, the golfer with the longest drive and the golfer who placed a ball closest to the pin. The first place team was Dave Allen and Mark Brengi with a score of 36. Their names will be placed on the KMMO plaque which hangs in the recreation hall. If you would like to hear more about the Ken Murphy Memorial Open Golf Tournament you can click HERE for the article done by Fox 61 News and HERE for the article and photos done by My Record Journal.

For the Love of the Game Award
The "For the Love of the Game Award" is given annually at the Ken Murphy Memorial Open awards ceremony to an “ individual who exemplifies a tireless passion for the sport of golf”. Sean McLaughlin was this year's award recipient. Sean is the general manager of The Farms Country Club and has been a tremendous supporter of the Sports Association’s golf program for the past 7 years. Sean and The Farms Country Club have generously hosted this tournament each year and donate time for the Adaptive Golf Club to use the course for golf outings each month during the summer. Thanks to thier generosity, dozens of adaptive golfers have had the opportunity to enjoy the sport of golf!

NEW Accessible Van!
Thanks to a $74,747 CHEFA (Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority) grant secured by the Gaylord Development Department, Gaylord was able to purchase a new custom-built 15-passenger handicapped-accessible van. The van will be used for community re-integration trips and adaptive sports outings. The Therapeutic Recreation Department and Gaylord Sports Association are very excitied for the new van which will serve our patients for many years to come.
