The Sports Association is dedicated to improving the lives of persons with physical disabilities through adaptive sports and recreation.

Dear Friends of the Sports Association, 

We have lots of fun events coming up this summer!  Join us for some cycling, kayaking, waterskiing, golf or archery!  Cycle rides begin later this month and outdoor kayak outings begin in July.  The Veterans Adaptive Golf Class begins in July and the ever popular Golf Club begins another fun season this month.   

The annual Gaylord Gauntlet is coming up on Saturday, June 22nd and it is SOLD OUT!  Come on out to cheer on 1000+ runners, including 22 adaptive runners!  Plus, we'll have a festival area with music, food trucks and vendors.

Veterans Fishing Tournament -  Lake Congamond
The eighth annual SAVES Veteran's Fishing Tournament was held at Lake Congamond in Southwick, MA on May 7, 2019. Twenty-four Veterans were paired with volunteer anglers and each pair went out fishing for the day. Prizes were given for the top 3 weights and everyone enjoyed an awards luncheon at the end of the event. A big thank you to all the groups who help make this event possible including CT BASS Nation, Major Steven Roy Andrews Fishing Outreach Program, Disabled Sports USA, VA Adaptive Sports Grant, and all the volunteer anglers!
Adaptive Cycle Clinic
The Sports Association teamed up with Northeast Passage, Ti-Trikes, and Bike-On to host our annual Adaptive Cycle Clinic held on May 18, 2019 at the Moore Field House at Southern Connecticut State University! The clinic provided 18 participants with the opportunity to work with trained professionals to adapt the sport of cycling.  Participants in the clinic were able to choose from dozens of adaptive cycles and find the best equipment for them.  Cycle Club rides begin in June.  Contact the Sports Association at 203-284-2772 or sport@gaylord.org for additional information.

Gaylord Gauntlet - Saturday, June 22, 2019
The Gaylord Gauntlet is almost here!  We are excited to announce that the race is SOLD OUT!!  If you are not running or volunteering, you can still come out to cheer on the 1000+ runners, including 22 adaptive runners!  We still have some volunteer openings as well; visit the Gaylord Gauntlet website for more information.  We hope to see you at the Gauntlet!
Upcoming Programs
Adaptive Cycle Rides
Join us for a ride this summer!  This year, we are continuing to offer First Timer Rides.  These rides are designed for participants who have not participated in a cycle ride with the Sports Association.  First time riders must complete a cycle club application and cycle fitting with the Sports Association prior to attending a ride. Our cycle rides are on a closed trail, free from traffic. Cycle rides are designed to be enjoyable for riders of all abilities, so each ride may break into several groups based on ability, speed & distance desired.  All cyclists and volunteers must register for each ride by calling the Sports Association at 203-284-2772.

Open Water Kayak Outings

Experience the freedom of the open water during a Sports Association’s Adaptive Kayak Outing. Kayak Outings are for individuals who have participated and passed the Sports Association’s Kayak Class Series and would like to take their skills to the next level or just enjoy an outdoor kayak experience. Outings include all the necessary equipment and guidance from both American Canoe Association certified instructors and Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Outings are offered during the summer months and take place either on saltwater out of Lighthouse Point or on freshwater at Wintergreen Lake. Kayaking is not only a great fitness activity, it’s an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, socialize, watch for wildlife, relax and just have fun!

Adaptive Waterski Clinics

Adaptive water ski clinics offer participants with a physical disability the opportunity to try, learn, and progress in this fast and exciting water sport. Instruction is provided by USA Waterski Certified instructors, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists, and expert water skiers. We welcome both new and experienced skiers to enjoy a day of water skiing. Interested participants must provide an MD note, pass a water safety test, and meet all essential eligibility requirements. For more information on eligibility, please see the FAQ's on our webpage or give us a call!

Archery Clinics

Come and try this sport of skill and accuracy by registering for an Adaptive Archery Clinic! These clinics are designed for individuals with a physical disability or visual impairment to learn about and participate in the sport of archery. Participants will receive instruction from a level IV Certified USA Archery Coach as well as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists, and trained archery instructors to give the best possible instruction and support independence. Both beginners and advanced archers are welcome and all equipment is provided.

Golf Clinics

Veterans Adaptive Golf Class
Join the Gaylord Sports Association for our Adaptive Golf Class for Veterans! This 6-week class is for veterans who want to learn the sport of golf or improve golf skills and technique. The class series will start off on the driving range with instruction on topics such as golf equipment, grip, posture, swing technique, chipping, and putting. The class will progress to practice and training on the golf course. Instruction will be provided by PGA professionals and experienced volunteers who are trained in adaptive golf techniques and equipment. Beginners and experienced golfers are welcome and all equipment is provided. This program is for service members with a permanent
physical disability, visual impairment or PTSD.

Sports Association Golf Club
The Gaylord Sports Association Adaptive Golf Club is about to begin another season! The club meets on a weekly basis from June through August and is for golfers with a physical disability or visual impairment.  To be eligible, participants must be able to golf independently. This season, the club will visit Sleeping Giant Golf Course, Orange Hills Golf Course, and The Farms Country Club.  Each outing consists of a 9 hole round of golfThis group works with 3 dedicated coaches to improve their game and have a bunch of fun! For information on eligibility, dates of golf outings, and how to apply for membership, please contact the Sports Association at sports@gaylord.org or 203-284-2772.   See you on the course!
About Our Program and Events

The Sports Association is a program of Gaylord Hospital and is based out of Wallingford, CT. We are a Paralympic Sport Club and chapter member of Disabled Sports USA. We serve adults with physical disabilities and visual impairments and welcome new members to join us. All programs require registration and some programs have registration deadlines. We recommend early registration since some programs fill quickly. Call us at 203-284-2772 with any questions or to register. Most events are free unless otherwise noted.
