Sports Association Newsletter

The Sports Association is dedicated to improving the lives of persons with physical disabilities through adaptive sports and recreation.

Dear Friends of the Sports Association, 

We are all facing new challenges in response to COVID-19/coronavirus and we want to keep you updated on the changes within the Sports Association. 

Although our programs have been cancelled through May 3rd, we are working behind the scenes to plan our summer programs so that we are ready to resume programs as soon as possible!    

We will continue to monitor the current conditions and will inform you of any additional program changes.  Upcoming program information is included in this newsletter.  You can also check the status of our programs on our website.


We are not currently in the office, but we are checking voice messages and emails regularly.  Please reach out to us with any questions that you may have.  We also encourage you to contact us regarding upcoming programs that you would like to attend so that we can keep in touch with you about the status of our programs.  We have upcoming dates for golf, archery, kayak and yoga.  And the Paratriathlon Training Program will hopefully be starting up at the end of May.  Let us know if you are interested!  You can contact the Sports Association at 203-284-2772 or email us at sports@gaylord.org.

We know this is a difficult time for everyone and we hope that you are all staying safe and healthy.  We encouage you to explore the many new virtual programs out there to help you stay as active as possible at home.

Sports Association in the News-Connecticut Magazine!
The Gaylord Sports Association was recently featured in the March edition of Connecticut Magazine! Click here to read the story.  Thank you to Jay, Eileen and Brett for being the featured athletes in this article!
Choate Charity Sled Hockey Game
The 4th Annual Choate Charity Sled Hockey Game was held on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at the Remsen Arena at Choate in Wallingford, CT. The Choate varsity girls and boys hockey teams had the opportunity to try sled hockey alongside the Gaylord Wolfpack Sled Hockey Team. Everyone had a great time and the event was a success, raising over $2000 for the team! We would like to thank Choate students, Christina and Effie Tournas who helped organize this event.  Thank you to everyone who supported this event!
Hartford Wolfpack Community Foundation Grant
The Gaylord Sports Association was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the Hartford Wolfpack Community Foundation.  The foundation presented us with a check on March 11th at the Hartford Wolfpack game!  We are very excited and thankful to the Foundation for their generous support.  The grant will be used to help support the team with travel, equipment and league expenses. 
Program Updates
Below is a list of cancelled programs as well as upcoming programs that we hope to hold in May.  Please let us know if you are intersted in attending and we will be sure to be in touch with you as soon as we are cleared to start programs again. 

Annual Adaptive Rock Climbing Clinic-
April 4 - Cancelled.

Paradance Sport Clinic
- April 16 - Cancelled.  To be rescheduled.

Annual Adaptive Cycle Clinic-
May 2 - Cancelled.  We are looking into options for an alternate event - Stay Tuned!

Golf Clinics
- April 7- Cancelled.  Next scheduled clinic: May 5th, 2:00-4:00pm  

Archery Clinics
- April 23- Cancelled.  Next scheduled clinic: May 28, 2:00-4:00.   

Kayak Classes
- April classes Cancelled.  Next scheduled class: June 12 & 19, 2:00-4:00.

Seated Yoga Classes - April 1- Cancelled.  Next scheduled class:  May 6, 3:00-4:00.   

Veteran's Fishing Tournament - May 19th, Candlewood Lake, Danbury. 

Paratriathlon Training Program - Begins end of May.  See additional information below.

Ken Murphy Memorial Open Golf Tournament (KMMO)
- SAVE THE DATE -  June 15.
Other Programs
ParaTriathlon Training Program

We are gearing up for the Paratriathlon Training Program which is scheduled to begin at the end of  May!  We are welcoming back prior team members as well as new athletes.  This program is a great opportunity to try to sport of triathlon!  Athletes may choose to compete in all three legs of the race (swim, bike, run) or as part of a relay team.  The program includes coaching, equipment, a 3-month YMCA membership, group training sessions and training partners to help athletes reach their goals.  The program culminates with the Madison Triathlon in September.  Interested athletes must apply and be selected to participate in the program.  Please contact us to learn more or for application materials. 

Gaylord Gauntlet - Saturday, June 27, 2020
The Gaylord Gauntlet is a great event to look forward to!  Challenge yourself to conquer this fun course with over 20 obstacles!  Plus, runners can compete for FREE by fundraising $250 or more!  Or if running isn't for you, join our crew of over 100 volunteers!  Either way, you will be helping to raise funds to support the Sports Association!  This is an amazing and fun event and we hope you can join us!  Register now before the race fills up!

The Sports Association is a program of Gaylord Hospital and is based out of Wallingford, CT. We are a chapter member of Disabled Sports USA. We serve adults with physical disabilities and visual impairments and welcome new members to join us. All programs require registration and some programs have registration deadlines. We recommend early registration since some programs fill quickly. Call us at 203-284-2772 with any questions or to register. Most events are free unless otherwise noted.
